  1. HIV/AIDS in health, education and participation: an action space for youth involvement in the SADC Region

    In the SADC region, the HIV/AIDS rate is one of the fastest growing. This is especially true in the case of young adults and adolescent children. It is important to begin indoctrinating these children with comprehensive health skills and stronger self esteem to protect themselves. Mitchell presents strategies for both formal and nonformal education to reform education systems to begin preparing youth to assume the physical responsibilities to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS. Youth needs to be targeted to become the voice to speak to their peers and change the course of this epidemic.

  2. HIV/AIDS and sex education among the youth in Zambia: towards behavioural change

    This article addresses how sex education in Zambia has changed over the course of time, particularly due to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The article is based on fieldwork conducted by the author in Zambia during six periodsbetween 1992 and 2003, and additional literature on HIV/AIDS education. The research conducted by the author between 1992 and 2001 focused primarily on female initiation rites, while that of 2002-2003 focused on the knowledge of HIV/AIDS among Zambian youth and how the knowledge is passed on by teachers at primary schools, but also by health workers, peer educators, and parents. …

  3. HIV/AIDS School-based Education in Selected Asia-Pacific Countries

    This paper describes findings from a recent UNAIDS-funded study of how education systems in selected countries in East Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific are responding to HIV/AIDS-related education. Data were collected by means of postal questionnaire and key informant interviews in Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.Sources of information varied but included ministries, non-governmental organisations and other interested bodies. …

  4. HIV and AIDS myth buster

    "Engaging Young People to Prevent the Spread of HIV" is a pilot project implemented by the NGO SPACE (Society for People's Awareness, Care and Empowerment) and supported by UNESCO, New Delhi. This project is currently operational in 10 colleges of Delhi University and aims to enhance knowledge and skills of young people so that they are empowered to respond effectively to the challenges posed by HIV and AIDS.   5. HIV and AIDS knowledge, attitudes, practices and behaviour (KAPB) study in Namibia: key findings

    The main purpose of this study was to assess the current state of HIV risk behaviour through knowledge, attitudes and practices of young Namibians aged 10 to 24 as a baseline and to inform future programming. This study was conducted in three regions namely: Kavango, Omaheke and Ohangwena. It captured the perceptions of 1000 respondents in three categories: 10-14 year olds, 15-24 year olds (in and out of school) and adults.     In 2004, the University of Pretoria was contracted by the United Nations' Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE) to conduct research in Limpopo, South Africa, examining issues related to safety and threats for learners at the foundational (Grade R-3), intermediate (Grade 4-7) and senior (Grade 8-12) phases.
