  8. Assessing school climate towards sustainable learning for all in Sub-Saharan Africa: Perspectives from unstable health to school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV)

    The objective of the current study is to explore the use of Rasch scaling technique to construct a Perceived School Disorder Index (PSDI) in order to see if there are ‘stages’ of evolution in a school climate. More specifically, the research questions for the current study are: Which items constitute the PSDI in Sub-Saharan African countries? What profile of behavioural problems are likely to emerge at different stages of the school climate? What were boys’ and girls’ learning outcomes at each stage of the school climate?

    This paper examines how policies and strategies to address school-related gender-based violence have evolved since 2000, when gender-based violence within education was largely invisible. It traces remarkable progress in research, policy and programmes, particularly since the mid-2000s when evidence around the globe exposed high levels of many forms of violence. However, there is still insufficient knowledge about what works to reduce violence, and weaknesses in processes of policy enactment which inhibit effective action. …

    Ce rapport s’inscrit dans le cadre des travaux menés par le groupe de travail sur les « violences de genre en milieu scolaire comme facteur de déscolarisation des filles » lancé par le ministère des Affaires étrangères et européennes et l’Association Genre en Action. Ce dossier se focalise sur les violences de genre exercées au sein de l’école et autour de l’école dans vingt pays d’Afrique francophone.

  12. Are schools safe and gender equal spaces? Findings from a baseline study of school related gender-based violence in five countries in Asia

    This report presents the results of a study on School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) undertaken by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in partnership with the Plan International. The study gathers empirical evidence on the magnitude and nature of SRGBV and help-seeking behavior of girls and boys aged 12-17 years in five countries – Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam. In addition, it also explores the perceptions and attitudes of key adults, teachers and parents, towards SRGBV.

  13. Shaping norms when they form: Investing in primary prevention of gender-based violence through working with children in schools

    This paper focuses on the Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS) initiative, a school-based program that aims to promotes gender equality by encouraging equal relationships between girls and boys, examining the social norms that define men's and women's roles, value attached these roles and questioning the use of violence. It uses gender transformative approach to engage students in self-reflection and critical thinking through Group Education Activities in classrooms and campaigns.

  14. School-related gender-based violence is preventing the achievement of quality education for all

    This policy paper argues that school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is a global concern preventing children, especially girls, exercising their right to a safe, inclusive and quality education. The paper calls for a systematic and harmonized approach to identify, monitor and understand SRGBV, as well as strong policy interventions to develop targeted solutions to address the problem effectively.

  15. Effectiveness of a comprehensive sexual and gender-based violence prevention project for in-school girls in Swaziland

    Swaziland is one of the sub-Saharan African countries affected by Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV and AIDS, with women facing greater risk compared to men. In response to increasing reports of violence against women and children in the country, the Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA) launched a Girls’ Empowerment Clubs (GEC) program in primary and secondary schools in order prevent SGBV cases. …
