The Working Group on Countries in Rapid Transition was formed in May 2008 to further explore the question whether countries in Asia undergoing rapid transition have a heightened vulnerability to HIV and what factors must be considered for mounting an effective long-term response. The six countries in rapid transition, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam, which are the focus countries in this report, stand at the crossroads of being able to design, finance and deliver better social and health care interventions in AIDS response. This report underlines the demographic, economic and social transformation taking place in the six countries and makes an attempt to analyze and project how these rapid changes may impact the spread of HIV in years to come and recommends some critical and sustainable long-term measures that will need to be adopted in order to curb the epidemic and its impact in these countries mentioned.
