This document was published by the Child-to-Child Trust in 2005. This book advocates and aims to strengthen the provision of good quality health education for all children. This document consists of 3 parts : Part 1 : "Children as partners"; part 2 "Children's action"; part 3: "Facts for life: Prime messages and supporting information". The book is illustrated with examples of inspiring work being done across the world by educators and health workers dedicated to improving the lives of children and their families. The book is designed for teacher and health workers. Examples and practical suggestions on how to implement an integrated approach to school health promotion are included. The objectives of the document are : to describe how effective health education programmes help children and their families, to provide specific know, do and feel objectives for health education programmes working with children on each of the selected issues covered by Facts for Life; to demonstrate how to achieve these objectives in both a formal and non-formal school setting through high quality planning, teaching and evaluation; to show how to integrate life-skills learning into a health education programme. The part on HIV and AIDS is integrated in part 2 and 3. Part 2 consists of an introduction in six sessions following this topic plan: "People living positively with HIV and AIDS (Upper primary)". Part 3 deals with key messages and supporting information. The book focuses on an important element: children must be taught about sexual health, HIV and AIDS before they reach an age when they start experimenting with sex, what means primary school age children. It also highlights the importance of information and education about the disease and access to condoms to reduce the risk. The information provided is general but relevant and supportive. The range of themes is broad :HIV counselling and testing, condoms, girl's vulnerability to HIV infection, unsafe and unprotected sex, drugs, STIs, life skills...
