Action Abu Dhabi: Transforming the HIV Response in a Rapidly Developing Society, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 31 January 2009, 2009
The HIV/AIDS training workshop for Religious Leaders (RL) was conducted on 31 January 2009. The main objective is to mobilize for HIV/AIDS prevention, to raise awareness and sensitize religious leaders with regards to various aspects of the HIV epidemic, including stigma and discrimination, to become active agents in dealing with PLWH, and to incorporate HIV messages in their work in the UAE and the region. Recommendations were made during the workshop, in particular: - To use the Religious Leaders Kit against AIDS as a practical tool on how to integrate messages related to AIDS in their work; - To work with key stakeholders such as health and media professionals in the community to debunk cultural myths and stigma regarding HIV by creating awareness and proper counseling services; - To dedicate several Friday sermons to discuss HIV/AIDS and the religious obligation towards PLWH and their families; - To provide sessions and lectures in mosques, educational institutions, NGOs and other services to raise awareness; - To focus and dedicate training workshops for female religious leaders in the community to raise their awareness and to raise society's awareness.
