    South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most severe AIDS epidemics in the world with more than five million (or an estimated 11%) of the population living with HIV. For each person living with HIV, the impact is felt not only by the infected person, but it also impacts the lives of their families, friends and wider communities, significantly multiplying the effect.   2. The health of our educators: A focus on HIV/AIDS in South African public schools

    The evidence presented in this report shows that the health of our educators is a source of concern because the prevalence of HIV is high. The determinants are multiple: behavioural, knowledge deficit, lack of self-efficacy skills, migratory practices, gender, and alcohol misuse. Chronic conditions such as hypertension, stomach ulcers, arthritis and diabetes are common. The report also shows that our country is likely to lose a very high proportion of educators due to job dissatisfaction, job stress and low morale. …

  3. Educator Attrition and Mortality in South Africa. A study into gross educator attrition rates and trends, including analysis of the causes of these by age and gender, in the public schools system in South Africa 1997/8-2003/4.

    This report provides the first overview of education attrition and mortality trends not reliant on estimates, models or projections, but on primary data contained in government registers. As such there was no sampling frame and no statistical deduction in terms of attrition - only analysis of hard data.The aim of the study is to estimate gross educator attrition rates and trends, including an analysis of the causes of these by age and gender, in the public schools system in South Africa. The magnitude and dimensions of educaor attrition and its components, including mortality were examined.
