PEPFAR and USAID, in collaboration with UNICEF, supported AIDSTAR-One in conducting a mapping activity to identify HIV policies and services for adolescents in 10 sub-Saharan African countries: Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This technical report summarizes AIDSTAR-One’s findings and is a resource for program planners and policymakers working to improve services and policies for HIV prevention, care, and treatment among adolescents and ALHIV in sub-Saharan Africa. …

  2. Educational attainment and HIV/AIDS prevalence: A cross-country study

Using data for a large cross-country sample, a reasonable model is estimated to judge the effect of adult educational attainment on prevalence of HIV. Three main points are noted. First, there is an indication of a significantly negative effect of educational attainment on HIV prevalence. Second, magnitude of the impact appears sizable. Third, a simple test suggests that the model does not have any major specification problem. Three additional aspects may also be interesting. First, the impact of per capita income is negative but statistically weak. …

  3. Updated stocktaking report: education sector responses to HIV and AIDS

This report updates a preliminary stocktaking review of research on HIV and AIDS in the education sector carried out by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) in September 2008, and commissioned by the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education. 4. Literature review on HIV and AIDS, education and marginalization

The theme of the 2010 GMR on Reaching and Teaching the Most Marginalized has particular relevance for the IATT on Education as marginalization is a cause of HIV risk and vulnerability, and often a consequence of being HIV-positive. Children affected by AIDS can face particular challenges in accessing educational opportunities, ensuring regular school attendance, and continuing their studies. Teachers are given an important responsibility in ensuring that children and young people acquire essential knowledge, skills and attitudes for HIV prevention. …

  5. HIV/AIDS, Stigma and Children: A literature review

This research suggests that stigma and discrimination can exacerbate the material and psychological problems children already face in context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This paper reviews the literature on HIV/AIDS, children and stigma to interrogate the following questions: What is the evidence that HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination directly affects children, both materially and psychologically? How does HIV/AIDS-related stigma impact materially and psychologically, on adult caregivers and household structures supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS? …
