    Recent evidence suggests that conditional cash transfer programs for schooling are effective in raising school enrollment and attendance. However, there is also reason to believe that such programs can affect other outcomes, such as the sexual behavior of their young beneficiaries. Zomba Cash Transfer Program is a randomized, ongoing conditional cash transfer intervention targeting young women in Malawi that provides incentives (in the form of school fees and cash transfers) to current schoolgirls and recent dropouts to stay in or return to school. …

  2. The impact of HIV and AIDS on education: education for orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia

    In Zambia, many children have lost one or both parents to HIV and AIDS, leaving them with the responsibility of caring for younger siblings and with little money for school necessities, such as uniforms and books. Oxfam GB is working in partnership with communities and local organisations, including the Zambia Education and Development Advocacy Organisation (ZEDAO), Children In Distress (CINDI) and YWCA Mongu to achieve high quality education for all, giving future generations the chance to lift their communities out of poverty.

  4. Factors influencing access and retention in secondary schooling for orphaned and vulnerable children and young people: case studies from high HIV and AIDS prevalence contexts in Lesotho

    The aim of this study was to identify factors influencing access and retention in secondary schooling for orphans and other vulnerable children living in high HIV prevalence areas of Lesotho. A case study approach was used to address this aim. The findings from this study have been used to inform an intervention that seeks to increase access to learning and thereby reduce drop-out and repetition rates in secondary schools. Lack of investments in human capital and adverse conditions during childhood are often associated with lower living standards in the future.   8. The demand for education for orphans in Zimbabwe

    We examine the effect of orphan status on school enrolment in Zimbabwe, a country strongly impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic with a rapidly growing population of orphans. Using data from 2003, after controlling for other determinants of enrolment we find that orphans are less likely to attend school than non-orphans. The result is robust to our correction for selection bias. …

    The long-term economic impacts of the AIDS epidemic on orphans have been major concerns in countries hit by the epidemic. Responding to these concerns, previous studies have investigated the schooling of orphans. Yet, few studies have investigated the impacts of orphan status into adulthood. Therefore, this paper examines the education attainment and land inheritance of former orphans, who have lost at least one parent before reaching 15, by using a survey of 889 households in Kenya in 2004. …

  15. Primary education in eastern and southern Africa: increasing access for orphans and vulnerable children in AIDS-affected areas

    This research and analysis assesses national and community level initiatives that have the potential to increase primary education access for children who have been orphaned (or made vulnerable) in areas heavily affected by AIDS in the eastern and southern Africa region (ESAR). This assessment analyzes various initiatives to learn lessons that can be used to more effectively target resources to increase primary education access for orphans and other vulnerable children in this region.
