  3. Policy scripts and students' realities regarding sexuality education in secondary schools in Kenya

    This paper explores the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) policy context and the realities facing in-school young people in Kenya. It is based on a review of the health and education sector policy documents as well as data from self-administered questionnaires with 3624 male and female students from eight secondary schools in Nairobi. Findings show that although the policies emphasise the right to access accurate SRH information, there are restrictions on the content of messages that can be provided to in-school young people. …

  5. HIV/AIDS vulnerabilities, discrimination, and service accessibility among Africa’s youth: Insights from a multi-country study

    Africa’s young people aged 15–24 are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. The impact of the epidemic on young people calls for close attention to the youth dimensions of the epidemic.   6. Love, sexual rights and young people: Learning from our peer educators how to be a youth-centred organisation

    This report examines the findings of an external assessment of the A+ programme, an innovative IPPF youth-led programme funded by Danida. The A+ programme was implemented by IPPF’s Member Associations in 16 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Central America. Its overriding goal was to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services and comprehensive sexuality education for young people, and to promote their sexual and reproductive health and rights. …

  7. Sexual and reproductive health and rights: implications for comprehensive sex education among young people in Uganda

    This paper presents the findings from an explorative study comparing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) against local realities for young people in Uganda. This was done by analysing statements by Ugandan adolescents extracted from focus group discussions relating to two SRHRs central in this research: (1) the right of young people to complete and accurate information; and (2) the right to self determination. We found discrepancies between these universally formulated rights and the (political, economic and community) context young Ugandans live in. …

  8. What they really want to know. Developing booklets for young people on growing up and sexuality

    A large proportion of young people worldwide are sexually active, and this exposes them to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and to the risk of unintended pregnancies. In 2008, 16 million girls aged 15 to 19 gave birth and approximately 40% of these pregnancies were unintended. Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years account for more than one third of all new HIV infections, with some 3,000 young people becoming infected with HIV each day. …

  9. How to reach young adolescents: A toolkit for educating 10 - 14 year olds on sexual and reproductive health

    This toolkit was designed to be used by implementors such as experienced programme staff from NGOs, government offices or private industries who want to implement an SRH project for 10-14 year olds enrolled in primary school. The project activities within the toolkit rely on the implementor creating a strong partnership with local schools and community leaders. The toolkit presents several overlapping approaches to increase young adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health knowledge and improve their sexual behaviours.

  10. Do teenagers respond to HIV risk information? Evidence from a field experiment in Kenya

    We use a randomized experiment to test whether and what information changes teenagers' sexual behavior in Kenya. Providing information on the relative risk of HIV infection by partner's age led to a 28 percent decrease in teen pregnancy, an objective proxy for the incidence of unprotected sex. Self-reported sexual behavior data suggests substitution away from older (riskier) partners and toward same-age partners. In contrast, the official abstinence-only HIV curriculum had no impact on teen pregnancy. …

  11. Sociodemographic variations in communication on sexuality and HIV/AIDS with parents, family members and teachers among in-school adolescents: a multi-site study in Tanzania and South Africa

    This paper aims to identify with whom in-school adolescents preferred to communicate about sexuality, and to study adolescents' communication on HIV/AIDS, abstinence and condoms with parents/guardians, other adult family members, and teachers. Data were obtained from a baseline questionnaire survey carried out in South Africa (Cape Town and Mankweng) and Tanzania (Dar es Salaam) in early 2004.   12. National sexual and reproductive health policy

    The goal of this policy is to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality attributed to sexual and reproductive conditions. The objectives are: 1. To provide essential sexual and reproductive health services, includes emergency obstetric and neonatal care; 2. To increase access to and utilization of sexual and reproductive health services; 3. To improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health services; 4. To ensure sustainable financing and effective management systems for sexual and reproductive health services.

  13. Children's access to information on behaviour change, sexuality and reproductive rights: a myth or reality

    The overall objective of this baseline survey was to help determine access to information on 1) HIV and AIDS prevention; 2) sexuality and 3) reproductive rights for in-school childre. The specific objectives were to: document existing behaviour change communication (BCC) materials and programs for children; document the BCC methods to children including the packaging of information and dissemination; establish the relevance of BCC materials to children; compile empirical evidence on the impact of BCC materials on children in Swaziland.

    This document is prepared as a national guideline for planning behaviour change interventions and activities on HIV/AIDS and Sexual Reproductive Health [SRH] for the period 2001-2004. The National BCI Strategy is a planning tool, to guide ministries, district planners, NGOs, CBOs, DACCs, learning institutions, faith institutions and employers on effective HIV/AIDS and SRH behaviour change programs.     Sex is Politics - Sexuality, Rights and Development Policies is a document produced by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) in 2009 (second edition). It is eight fact sheets with information regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The documents states that SRHR are controversial and are contested by moral conservative, religious, cultural and political forces in many parts of the world. These limitations tend to lead to a lack of information that prevent people making free, informed and reasonable decisions regarding their own sexuality and reproduction.
