  5. Scrutinize campaign: a youth HIV prevention campaign addressing multiple and concurrent partnerships

Launched on South African television in June 2008, the Scrutinize Campaign was a year-long series of HIV prevention ads targeting multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. Irreverent and humorous, with strong, colorful visuals, the campaign's ads were markedly different from previous South African HIV prevention campaigns for youth. Rather than telling the audience what to do, the Scrutinize campaign messaging encouraged those in the audience to scrutinize their own behavior, resulting in dramatic uptake of key HIV prevention messages.

  6. A tale of two countries: rethinking sexual risk for HIV among young people in South Africa and the United States

This paper compares the sexual behaviors of young people in South Africa (SA) and the United States (US) with the aim of better understanding the potential role of sexual behavior in HIV transmission in these two countries that have strikingly different HIV epidemics. Nationally representative, population-based surveys of young people ages 18-24 years from SA (n = 7,548) and the US (n = 13,451) were used. The prevalence of HIV was 10.2% in SA and 1% in the US. …

  7. Multiple sexual partners and condom use among 10-19 year-olds in four districts in Tanzania: What do we learn?

This study tested a hypothesis that sexual relationships with multiple partners in the 10- to 19-year age group spurs condom use during sex. The authors performed secondary analysis using data from the adolescent module of the cross-sectional household survey on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) that was done in Kigoma, Kilombero, Rufiji and Ulanga districts, Tanzania in 2008. A total of 612 adolescents from a random sample of 1,200 households participated in this study. Pearson Chi-Square was used as a test of association between multiple sexual partners and condom use. …

  8. HIV/AIDS related knowledge and perceived risk associated with condom use among adolescents in Uganda

While considerable attention has been paid to sexual behaviors among HIV high-risk populations in Africa, few studies have looked at the adolescent population. Using data from the 2004 National Survey of Adolescents in Uganda, logistic regression models were fitted to examine the odds that HIV/AIDS related knowledge and perceived risk of HIV infection are associated with condom use among adolescents. …

  9. Do teenagers respond to HIV risk information? Evidence from a field experiment in Kenya

We use a randomized experiment to test whether and what information changes teenagers' sexual behavior in Kenya. Providing information on the relative risk of HIV infection by partner's age led to a 28 percent decrease in teen pregnancy, an objective proxy for the incidence of unprotected sex. Self-reported sexual behavior data suggests substitution away from older (riskier) partners and toward same-age partners. In contrast, the official abstinence-only HIV curriculum had no impact on teen pregnancy. …

  10. Youth Visioning for Island Living final reporting on HIV/AIDS awareness in Papua New Guinea (PNG)

We decided to implement this project here in our province (Western Highlands Province, WHP) among 30 institutions due to the fact that there is no decrease to the spread of HIV/AIDS here. HIV/AIDS is on the rise here (PNG) amongst young people. Many young people including schooling teenagers have died of HIV/AIDS. It involves teachers as well, among many who are dying daily in the Province and the country as a whole. Another factor is that HIV/AIDS is highly spreading here in PNG especially among young people. …

This five-day training course on strengthening the adolescent component of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health programmes has been developed for public health managers. The course materials have been applied and further developed in courses throughout the world. They help public health managers to become familiar with the special health and development needs of young people, and to take those needs into consideration when planning interventions that aim to improve the reproductive health status of and reduce the prevalence of HIV infection among individuals from 10 to 24 years of age. …
