    This article provides a summary of the evidence at a global level on who is missing out on programming to achieve an "AIDS-free generation." In addition the article provides evidence-based interventions which may be implemented to improve both HIV and equity outcomes. The article raises and explains three key issues and goals: that of eliminating new HIV infections in children and keeping families healthy, that of preventing HIV infections among adolescents and young people, and that of protection, care and support for children affected by HIV/AIDS. …

    This report presents the most comprehensive compilation to date of sex-disaggregated statistics on children and young people in the developing world. It examines a selection of indicators that are currently available to measure well-being and assess children's rights. During the past decade, an unprecedented amount of internationally comparable household survey data has become available for a broad range of indicators covering many countries.   5. The psychological effect of orphanhood in a matured HIV epidemic: an analysis of young people in Mukono, Uganda

    As the HIV pandemic progresses, the number of orphans is expected to rise. Uganda is one of the countries that has been most impacted by the pandemic. A few studies have explored the effects of orphanhood on psychological well-being; however, most of these studies have not explored potential pathways through which orphanhood could affect psychological well-being. Using a school-based sample, this study sought to examine the differences in depressive symptoms and hopelessness between orphans and non-orphans in Mukono District, Uganda. …

  6. Looking within: creating community safety nets for vulnerable youth in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania

    This case study describes the work of a program implemented by Youth Alive Tanzania, a faith-based organization in Dar-es-Salaam, which created The Youth and Parents Crisis Counseling Center (YOPAC) in 1999. YOPAC was established by Youth Alive with the specific aim of helping children and youth protect their access to education, including primary and secondary education, as well as vocational training. YOPAC's other activities include home-based care, HIV testing and counseling, psychosocial care and support, education, and outreach programming. …

  7. Protective factors in the lives of bisexual adolescents in North America

    We compared protective factors among bisexual adolescents with those of heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, and gay or lesbian adolescents. Methods. We analyzed 6 school-based surveys in Minnesota and British Columbia. Sexual orientation was measured by gender of sexual partners, attraction, or self-labeling. Protective factors included family connectedness, school connectedness, and religious involvement. General linear models, conducted separately by gender and adjusted for age, tested differences between orientation groups. …

  8. Most at Risk Young People Survey Cambodia 2010

    Cambodia's Most at Risk Young People Survey (MARYPS) 2010 is a follow up survey of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2004. The survey provides the policymakers and planners with data on alcohol, drug and sex related behaviors and utilization of sexual and reproductive health services among MARYP. This survey is jointly supported by FHI, PSI, UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO.

  11. Youth at odds: Thai youth's precious futures in a globalized world

    This research study provides concrete and realistic recommendations for policy makers and programme managers on the issues of social capital and the relevance of the concept for understanding the lives of adolescents. Findings provide critical evidence about the conditions that give rise to growing youth violence, HIV/AIDS infection rates among youth, and the relatively limited improvement in secondary school enrollment and completion rates among Thai youth.
