  2. Marriage and childbirth as factors in dropping out from school: an analysis of DHS data from sub-Saharan Africa

    This paper explores the potential importance of marriage and childbirth as determinants of school-leaving in sub-Saharan Africa and identifies some of the common underlying factors that contribute to premature school-leaving and early marriage and childbearing. We find that the risks of leaving school during adolescence for reasons other than childbirth or marriage far exceed the risks associated with these two demographic events. …

    The report presents the findings of an international comparative analysis of age at marriage and age at first birth, marital instability, informal unions, and teenage reproductive behaviour, with emphasis on trends over the past decade. For some trend analyses, this review is limited to countries where DHS surveys were conducted between 1990 and 2002.

  7. Are adolescents and young adults more likely than are older women to choose commercial and private sector providers of modern contraception?

    This study tests the hypothesis suggested by many smaller studies that young people prefer to use private providers to access contraceptive methods. It examines the patterns in young women’s levels of sexual activity, use of modern methods of contraception, and sources of modern contraception by age group and union status, using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data.
