  1. Preventing HIV transmission in adolescents: an analysis of the Portuguese data from the Health Behaviour School-aged Children study and focus groups

    This research examined demographic, personal, family and school variables related to adolescents’ sexual behaviour and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS infected people. This research was also designed to understand the cognitive and emotional bases of the sexual decisions made by adolescents. Preventive research must explore how young people understand, manage and explore their sexuality, risk and relationships.

  2. Is peer education the best approach for HIV prevention in schools? Findings from a randomized controlled trial

    The purpose of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of peer education when compared to teacher-led curricula in AIDS prevention programs conducted in schools in Rome, Italy. The only apparent benefit of the peer-led intervention, compared to that led by teachers, was a greater improvement in knowledge of HIV. Neither of the interventions induced changes in sexual behavior. However, the role of possible biases and methodological problems must be considered when interpreting these results.

  3. Cost analysis of school-based sexuality education programs in six countries

    Policy-makers who are making decisions on sexuality education programs face important economic questions: what are the costs of developing sexuality education programs; and what are the costs of implementing and scaling them up? This study responds to these questions by assessing the costs of six school-based sexuality education programs (Nigeria, Kenya, Indonesia, India, Estonia and the Netherlands). Cost analyses were carried out in schools that were fully implementing a SE program, as this best reflects the resources needed to run an effective program. …

  4. Awareness and knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among school-going adolescents in Europe: a systematic review of published literature

    This systematic review looks at levels of STI awareness, knowledge and perceived risk of school-going adolescents in Europe. Fifteen studies were included, all of which cross-sectional and conducted among 13 to 20 year olds. Awareness and knowledge varied depending on gender. Awareness on HIV/AIDS was high (over 90%) but low for HPV (5.4%-66%). While knowledge that condoms protect against STIs was high, adolescents viewed it as an interim contraception method before using the pill.     This publication deals with current sexual and reproductive health issues. In this issue, a range of themes related to peer education are tackled, including its theoretical foundations and models; its role in battling STIs/HIV/AIDS in Denmark and the Russian Federation; theatre as a peer-led approach in central and eastern Europe; Hungary's approach to sex education; and the role of medical students in providing peer education.

  6. Evaluation of an AIDS education programme for young adults

    The aim of this randomized, pre-post test study was to evaluate the impact of AIDS education programs (Streetwize UK) on adolescents. Participants were identfied from six youth training centers in Nottingham, England. The participants were aged 16-19 years and each centre ws randomly allocated to experimental (n=173) or control (n=164) group. Sixty-six percent of the sample was sexually active.     School health education programs are needed to curb the high prevalence of STIs and unintended pregnancies among adolescents in the UK. Accurate data on knowledge levels and sexual education needs are necessary to design effective programs.   8. Peer education in HIV prevention: an evaluation in schools

    Peer education is increasingly being used to increase HIV and AIDS awareness among youth. This pilot cohort study tested the effectiveness of this approach among high school students in 10 schools in Athens, Greece. Over one year, 702 students were followed (n = 493 experimental group, n = 209 control group) and knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and practices assessed through a pre and post intervention questionnaire. Students in the intervention group were moderately more empowered to take personal responsibility and adopt safer sexual practices. …

  9. HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge, Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors as Predictors of Condom Use Among Young Adults in Croatia

    This report looks at data from a multistage probability sample of 1,093 Croatian youth aged 18-24 years in 2005. Regression was used to investigate relationships between HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and sexual behavior and condom use at first and last sexual encounter and consistent use of condoms. Results found that positive attitudes towards condoms and condom use at first intercourse were predictors for condom use at most recent intercourse and overall consistent use of condoms (OR: 1.3). Sex education programs should be given to youth before they become sexually active.

  10. AIDS knowledge and sexual activity among Flemish secondary school students: a multilevel analysis of the effects of type of education

    The behavior of adolescents puts them at an increased risk for HIV and other STIs, and their knowledge about HIV/AIDS is often inadequate. An understanding of how AIDS knowledge and sexual activity co-vary among Flemish secondary school students and of how education type, specifically, affects these students is limited. This study addresses the question of whether the effects of education type on HIV/AIDS knowledge and sexual activity are independent of the socio-demographic characteristics of the students.
