    This strategic action plan sets out Public Health England’s (PHE) approach to improving the public’s sexual and reproductive health and reversing the HIV epidemic. PHE will use its expertise to enhance data and surveillance; to build on the evidence base for commissioning effective interventions; and to lead and support local, regional and national partners in the implementation of evidence-based public health interventions across the system.

  3. What they really want to know. Developing booklets for young people on growing up and sexuality

    A large proportion of young people worldwide are sexually active, and this exposes them to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and to the risk of unintended pregnancies. In 2008, 16 million girls aged 15 to 19 gave birth and approximately 40% of these pregnancies were unintended. Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years account for more than one third of all new HIV infections, with some 3,000 young people becoming infected with HIV each day. …

  5. The impact of television and radio on reproductive behavior and on HIV/AIDS knowledge and behavior

    This is a study of the association of radio and television exposure with different aspects of reproductive behavior and with knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in connection with HIV/AIDS. The measures of mass media are limited to the frequency that women and men report listening to the radio and watching television, which are standard questions in the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS).   6. Awareness and knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among school-going adolescents in Europe: a systematic review of published literature

    This systematic review looks at levels of STI awareness, knowledge and perceived risk of school-going adolescents in Europe. Fifteen studies were included, all of which cross-sectional and conducted among 13 to 20 year olds. Awareness and knowledge varied depending on gender. Awareness on HIV/AIDS was high (over 90%) but low for HPV (5.4%-66%). While knowledge that condoms protect against STIs was high, adolescents viewed it as an interim contraception method before using the pill. In this study, knowledge did not translate into safer sex behavior change. …

  7. National plan of action for scaling up SRH and HIV prevention initiatives for young people

    This plan provides a framework for improving the sexual reproductive health of young people, and protecting them from HIV. The plan consists of five sections: background, policy and programming, goals and guiding principles, institutional framework and monitoring and evaluation.     To measure the effects of exposure to topics within the life skills curriculum on sexual and reproductive health knowledge and behaviors among youth, the University of Natal-Durban School of Development Studies, Horizons, The Population Council's Policy Research Division, and Tulane University undertook a prospective study in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa, from 1999 to 2001. This summary considers the impact of the life skills program on a population-based sample of youth in two districts in the province.

  9. Influence of religious affiliation and education on HIV knowledge and HIV-related sexual behaviors among unmarried youth in rural central Mozambique

    The interactions among religious affiliation, education, HIV knowledge, and HIV-related sexual behaviors among African church youth are poorly understood. In this sociodemographic study, 522 unmarried youth 12-28 years old in rural central Mozambique were surveyed with a structured questionnaire. Using binary logistic regression analysis, the authors used religious affiliation and education to measure influence on (1) HIV transmission and prevention knowledge and attitudes and (2) HIV-related sexual behaviors among youth. …

These limitations tend to lead to a lack of information that prevent people making free, informed and reasonable decisions regarding their own sexuality and reproduction.
