  1. Assessment of the psychometric properties of HIV knowledge items across five countries

    HIV knowledge is commonly measured in HIV prevention research and program evaluations, but rigorous measurement standards are not always applied. Using item response theory methods, we examined the psychometric functioning of five commonly used HIV knowledge questions in five countries with varying HIV prevalence.   4. Descripción de los conocimientos, actitudes, susceptibilidad y autoeficacia frente al VIH/SIDA en un grupo de adolescentes colombianos

    The objective of this research is to describe and compare correct knowledge, incorrect ideas, attitudes, susceptibility and self-efficacy in cases of HIV/AIDS in a group of Colombian adolescents. The sample consists of 222 adolescents of both sexes between the ages of 10 and 18. (Average 14.10 and a typical deviation of 1.925), who belong to a public institution in the city of Cali. This is descriptive correlational research (Montero and León, 2005). The information was gathered by the application of the Colombian adaptation of the HIV-65 scale (Bermúdez, Buela-Casal and Uribe (2005), which measures knowledge, attitudes, susceptibility, and self-efficacy in cases of HIV/AIDS. The results show that the scale obtaining the highest score is that of incorrect knowledge, which suggests that there are still erroneous and mythical concepts about HIV/AIDS. It was also found that there are different meanings depending on age, academic level and sex.

  5. Effects of an Entertainment-Education Radio Soap Opera on Family Planning and HIV Prevention in St. Lucia

    Context: An entertainment-education radio soap opera, Apwe Plezi, was broadcast from February 1996 to September 1998 in St. Lucia. The program promoted family planning, HIV prevention and other social development themes. Methods: The program's effects were assessed through analyses of data from nationally representative pretest and posttest surveys, focus-group discussions and other qualitative and quantitative sources. Results: Among 1,238 respondents to the posttest survey, 35% had listened to Apwe Plezi, including 12% who listened at least once per week. …

  8. Outcomes of three different models for sex education and citizenship programs concerning knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of Brazilian adolescents

    This cross-sectional study describes three approaches to sex education in schools in three locations-- Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador, all in Brazil. It compares knowledge, attitudes and practices related to sexuality, citizenship and gender among adolescents in schools with such programs, compared to controls in schools without them. Results show that the program in Salvador improved knowledge on sexuality and reproductive physiology, attitudes towards citizenship, and use of modern contraceptives compared to controls. …

  9. A Tri-Level HIV-Prevention Educational Intervention

    This paper describes an intervention designed to provide HIV education at three levels: to students in a registered nurse baccalaureate-nursing program, lay health advisors, and African Americans in high risk communities. Students conducted needs assessments and prepared teaching plans, contributed to funding proposals and implemented and evaluated their programs. Lay health workers were trained as peer educators and were drawn from the high risk community, to increase their credibility.   10. A Group Technique for Testing Knowledge about HIV/AIDS

    This paper discusses how a sociology professor at the University of Arizona coped with increasing interest among university students on AIDS. She discusses dealing with larger class sizes and the need to make sure students understood the basic biology of HIV. She designed a series of riddles that students in groups of 5 would complete in 20 minutes testing their knowledge. She would then mark the riddle answers and discuss these answers with students afterwards.

  12. HIV and violence against women in Belize

    The overall objective of this study was to explore the potential intersections between two forms of violence against women (VAW) - partner violence and non-partner violence - among users of VAW and HIV services and to document their experiences, knowledge and perceptions on HIV and violence. The information was collected using a standardized questionnaire in each participant country in order to collect and compare data in a multi-country analysis.
