    The Learning about Living (LaL) Nigeria project was initially piloted in Lagos and Cross River States, and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, from 2007 to 2009 and coordinated by OneWorld UK (OWUK).   4. Evaluation of an HIV/AIDS peer education programme in a South African workplace

    This paper describes an evaluation of a workplace HIV/AIDS peer-educational program. A cross-sectional study of 900 employees was conducted in 2001 across three areas in South Africa and measured the impact of a peer-education program on knowledge, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, perceptions of risk and condom use. Peer-education had no impact on any outcome. Some 59% of subjects had good knowledge, 62% positive attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS, 34% reported frequently using condoms, 73% perceived themselves at low risk for infection. …

  5. Tackling HIV/AIDS: Mass-media and international conferences. Soul City, Going to scale across borders: the Choose Life project

    Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

  8. The Straight Talk Campaign in Uganda: Impact of Mass Media Initiatives

    This report presents the findings of an evaluation of the Straight Talk (ST) mass media communication programs, which have been implemented in Uganda since 1993. The mass media programs largely comprise three main materials: multilingual Straight Talk Radio Shows, multilingual Straight Talk newspapers, and an English language Young Talk newspaper. Straight Talk also implements a wide array of school-based activities to engender a youth-friendly school environment. …

  9. Impact of the HEART Campaign. Findings from the Youth Surveys, 1999 and 2000

    The Helping Each other Act Responsibly Together Campaign, designed specifically for youth and by youth, informs young people about HIV/AIDS, discusses ways to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and promotes abstinence and condom use. The campaign was designed to provide a social context in which prevailing social norms are discussed, questioned and reassessed.
