It outlines parameters for a strategic planning exercise that will develop an action plan for the period 2006-2010 for the education sector which in turn will contribute to the preparation of the National AIDS strategy for the same 5 year period.   2. Declaration of commitment on HIV/AIDS and political declaration on HIV/AIDS: midway to the Millennium Development Goals. Report of the Secretary-General

    The present report reviews progress in implementing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the 2006 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS. Its findings are based primarily on the reports of 147 member states on national progress in the response to HIV, which together represent the most comprehensive body of evidence ever assembled regarding the response to HIV in low-, middle- and high-income countries. After having presented the key findings, this report explains the key recommandations.

    This study provides estimates of the size and distribution of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in eight sub-Saharan African countries with relatively high HIV prevalence (Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe), and assesses their situation over several dimensions including schooling and health care. The study uses data collected in recent nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS) that included HIV testing of adult women and men. …

    This paper examines the evidence on access to conventional schooling for children and young people affected by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and makes recommendations for the further development of the SOFIE Project. The findings reveal the highly complex and context specific nature of the educational impact.   6. The impact of an adult child's death due to AIDS on older-aged parent: results from a direct interview survey

    The report describes the methodology and findings of a direct interview survey in Thailand of parents of deceased adult children who died of AIDS and a comparison group of older age parents who had not suffered such a loss. The results provide extensive information on living arrangements; parental care giving; health impacts; spouses and orphaned children; care, treatment and funeral expense; longer term economic impacts; and community reaction.
