The Nigerian Population/Family Life Education Programme focuses on equipping individuals with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to effectively deal with problems such as decline in sexual morality, and the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. The aim of the programme is to improve the quality of life of Nigerians. Based on the successes of the programme at secondary level, a decision was made to expand the programme to the primary level, focusing on the last two years of primary school.
The objectives of this teacher training manual are in line with those of the National Population Education Programme. It is part of a 13 module series intended to help teachers in Nigeria develop a sound knowledge base in population education, skills and competencies as well as develop teachers' competence in the use of innovative methods in teaching population education. The manual deals with the use of the following methods in the classroom: inquiry approach, problem-solving approach, value clarification approach, discussion method, role-playing technique and dramatization method.
