  7. HIV and adolescents: Guidance for HIV testing and counselling and care for adolescents living with HIV

    Adolescents (10–19 years) and young people (20–24 years) continue to be vulnerable, both socially and economically, to HIV infection despite efforts to date. This is particularly true for adolescents — especially girls — who live in settings with a generalized HIV epidemic or who are members of key populations at higher risk for HIV acquisition or transmission through sexual transmission and injecting drug use.     Background: Previous research has suggested that orphaned children and adolescents might have elevated risk for HIV infection. We examined the state of evidence regarding the association between orphan status and HIV risk in studies of youth aged 24 years and younger.     This study explores HIV prevalence and behavioral characteristics of Chinese male students who have sex with men (MSM). The authors conducted a cross-sectional study of MSM high-school and college students in Liaoning Province. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, and blood specimens were obtained and tested for HIV and syphilis. There were 436 eligible participants. HIV prevalence was 3.0% and syphilis prevalence was 5.0%. …
