    This paper illustrates how HIV/AIDS is affecting teachers as individuals and as professionals. Teachers are expected to play a major role in combating HIV/AIDS, but at the same time, the results of this study show that they are also being affected by the disease. And unless the difficulties that they face in their workplace and at home are dealt with, it is likely that the gravity of the disease may become unbearable for some of them. As a result, they will be unable to fully develop their role as communicators about the disease. …

  6. Teachers matter: Baseline findings on the HIV-related needs of Kenyan teachers

    This study was motivated by concerns that teachers are an important national resource yet have been overlooked by workplace HIV and AIDS programs. Study findings show that teachers are in need of teacher-centered programs that provide education and services related to HIV prevention, care and support, and stigma reduction.

  9. Children in primary school : the window of hope or the window of concern

    Age-related data regularly show AIDS cases being at their lowest for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 14. The low occurrence of AIDS among those aged 5-14 has led to children in this age range being regarded as constituting a "window of hope". Programmes targeted at this group are seen as providing a special opportunity to prevent infections and reduce the transmission of the disease.However, a number of circumstances relating to the way schools are organised and managed increase the risk of HIV infection for students, teachers and the community in which the school is embedded.
