  2. Responding to the HIV prevention needs of adolescents and young people in Asia: Towards (cost-) effective policies and programmes

    The current paper was commissioned by UNICEF and its partners (UNFPA, UNESCO, UNAIDS) to provide advice to the AIDS Commission in Asia on policy options on how to respond to HIV/AIDS among young people, in response to a 'Policy Options Workshop' which was held in Bangkok on 4-6 January 2007. This paper aims to provide guidance to policy makers on how to respond to the HIV prevention needs of young people in Asia. In particular, it aims to set priorities for action, aimed at preventing major HIV epidemics from occurring or limiting the scope or impact of current HIV epidemics in the region.

  4. Skills-based HIV and AIDS/STD prevention in schools in Vietnam

    This project was the main component of the UNICEF-assisted HIV and AIDS prevention project of the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) that began in 1997. It trained teachers in skills-based health education (also called 'life skills') for HIV and AIDS and other STD prevention, and supported them to implement the new approach in the classroom. Skills-based HIV and AIDS/STD related lessons were developed for grades 1-12 and integrated into the existing curriculum. New teachers' guidebooks and student worksheets were developed by those trained. …

    This paper describes findings from a recent UNAIDS-funded study of how education systems in selected countries in East Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific are responding to HIV/AIDS-related education.
