    The Kenya Girl Guide Association (KGGA) and Family Health International (FHI)/Impact began a program, which was developed by PATH, in 1999 to train young Girl Guides as HIV peer educators in their schools. The project aims to improve knowledge and skills related to HIV prevention and care among Girl Guides and their peers. In collaboration with KGGA and FHI/Impact, the Horizons Program is currently conducting a study to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention model in achieving the objectives of the peer education program. …

  5. Impact of five years of peer-mediated interventions on sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya

    Background: Since 2000, peer-mediated interventions among female sex workers (FSW) in Mombasa Kenya have promoted behavioural change through improving knowledge, attitudes and awareness of HIV serostatus, and aimed to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (STI) by facilitating early STI treatment. Impact of these interventions was evaluated among those who attended peer education and at the FSW population level.     The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges facing headteachers in the implementation of AIDS education in secondary school curriculum in Busia, Bunyala and Samia Districts and find out how they were coping. Specifically, it focused on challenges in induction of teachers, provision of teaching and learning materials, supervision and evaluation of the teaching of AIDS education.     Promoting sexual abstinence among never-married youth is an important component of HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns for youth in countries with generalized epidemics. The objective of this study was to examine trends in primary and secondary abstinence among never-married youth age 15-24 in Kenya over a ten-year period and to explore the role of HIV prevention knowledge, schooling, and contextual factors in affecting abstinence behavior. Data were from Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 1993, 1998, and 2003. Primary abstinence was defined as never-married youth who never had sex. …

    This report provides a summary of key findings from evaluations of four programs, two in Kenya and two in Tanzania, supporting orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC).     A tri-country HIV/AIDS and Refugees workshop was organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 10-13 December 2002. The objectives of the workshop were to improve the quality and to standardise the various HIV/AIDS programs implemented in the refugee camps in the three countries as well as to plan for 2003.
