This publication is the final report of a consultancy analyzing health and family life education (HFLE) teacher education at pre- and in-service levels in Guyana. The aim of the consultancy was to – based on international experience, previous reports, curriculum materials, interviews and visits to Cyril Potter College of Education – identify major gaps and give recommendations for improvement.
This report presents the findings and outcomes of the three joint UNESCO/World Bank missions to Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Lucia, and elaborates on next steps identified for action at both national and regional levels. The report also sets these findings and next steps within the broader context of the Caribbean plan for action and presents in its appendixes sample resources to guide the development of a comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS by the education sector.
During a research period of two months in Guyana, the EFAIDS programme was evaluated looking at its effects in a broader social context. In this study data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory observations during EFAIDS training workshops. In total 63 peoplewere interviewed of whom 50 were teachers and 17 were experts in the field of HIV and AIDS prevention and education.
