  1. A Group Technique for Testing Knowledge about HIV/AIDS

    This paper discusses how a sociology professor at the University of Arizona coped with increasing interest among university students on AIDS. She discusses dealing with larger class sizes and the need to make sure students understood the basic biology of HIV. She designed a series of riddles that students in groups of 5 would complete in 20 minutes testing their knowledge. She would then mark the riddle answers and discuss these answers with students afterwards.

  3. Becoming a responsible teen adaptation kit. Tools and resources for making informed adaptations to BART: Becoming a responsible teen

    Although the primary goal of Becoming a Responsible Teen (BART) is to decrease HIV infection among African-American adolescents ages 14 to 18, the curriculum also includes topics and activities relevant to teen pregnancy prevention. Teens learn to clarify their own values about sexual decisions and pressures, as well as practice skills to reduce sexual risk taking. These skills include correct condom use, assertive communication, refusal techniques, self-management and problem solving. Abstinence is woven throughout the curriculum and is discussed as the best way to prevent HIV and pregnancy. …

  11. On the Right Track: Vietnam Adopts Rights-based Policies for HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care

    Due in part to U.S. assistance on the policy front, the Vietnamese National Assembly enacted a more progressive, health- and rights-oriented national law regarding HIV/AIDS in mid-2006. Significantly, the new law officially endorses an array of specific HIV prevention activities for groups with high-risk behaviors. Ultimately, the policy environment in which donors and NGOs operate appears to be improving dramatically and holds promise for managing the epidemic as long as there is improved coordination among all actors.

    This report presents findings from the Girls Shape the Future study, which was designed to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of the Girls Incorporated Will Power/Won't Power curriculum developed to reduce sexual intercourse, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections among teenage girls. The study used two primary methods: an experimental design to assess the effectiveness of the program on outcomes relating to the curriculum model, and an analysis of program implementation to understand whether girls randomly assigned to participate received the intended intervention.
