  2. Nepal National Youth Shadow Report Progress Made on the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS

    Globally, 1.7 billion young people aged 10-24 make up one quarter of the world's population. Approximately 40% of all new HIV infections occur among young people between 15-24 years of age, and there are 5.4 million young people living with HIV. Young people are the face of HIV. We are at higher risk of HIV infection because we lack access to the crucial information, education, and services to protect themselves.   3. Tackling HIV-related stigma and discrimination in South Asia

    In its 2008 round, Tackling HIV and AIDS Stigma and Discrimination, the South Asia Region Development Marketplace (SARDM) supported 26 implementers from six countries to pilot innovative interventions over a 12- to 18-month period. The findings in this report are based on project monitoring and evaluation data collected by SARDM implementers and six case studies conducted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). They suggest some broad crosscutting principles as well as programmatic lessons associated with specific approaches. …

  4. A Study on Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices and Beliefs in the Context of HIV/AIDS among Out-of-School Street-based Children in Kathmandu and Pokhara

    This study, examining the knowledge, attitudes, practices and beliefs of street-based children in the context of HIV/AIDS, has been conducted to provide high quality data that can be acted upon with greater confidence to improve the appropriateness and effectiveness of programme interventions. This study clearly shows the high vulnerability of street-based children to HIV/AIDS. This information provides a valuable understanding of the vulnerability and risk behavior of street-based children which need to be targeted for HIV prevention.

  7. Gender and HIV Prevention Education in the Asia and Pacific Region

    This paper is a collection, both previously published and new, describing efforts in the Asia/Pacific region to target young women with HIV prevention health messages. It seeks to provide non-formal HIV prevention educators with information and tools that will help them understand the complexities of gender specific to the region.

  8. Youth reproductive and sexual health

    The study provides information on key reproductive and sexual health indicators in young women and men age 15-24 in 38 developing countries. The data come from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS) conducted between 2001 and 2005. Indicators are selected for the following key areas: background characteristics; adolescent pregnancy; contraception; sexual activity; and HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Additional analysis examines the association of various individual and household characteristics with the key indicators.

    This publication, "child marriage is a violation of human rights, compromising the development of girls and often resulting in early pregnancy and social isolation. Young married girls face onerous domestic burdens, constrained decision-making and reduced life choices.   10. A survey of teenagers in Nepal for life skills development and HIV/AIDS prevention

    The report summarizes the findings from a survey carried out by the Media Services International (MSI) on behalf of UNICEF Nepal. A total of 1400 teenagers randomly selected from across Nepal's five development regions were interviewed and their answers analyzed. Questions were asked to ascertain teenagers' abilities to cope with daily issues and changes experienced in adolescence.     The case study describes the demographic characteristics of Nepal's adolescent population; documents their programmes in responding to problems associated with adolescent reproductive health; highlights the advocacy and IEC strategies used to promote the ARH messages; culls out the lessons learned, analyzing the factors which contributed to their successes and failures; and finally based on these experiences, presents guidelines on how to run advocacy and IEC programmes on adolescent reproductive health successfully.

  13. Ensnared by AIDS: cultural contexts of HIV/AIDS in Nepal

    This book examines the meaning and cultural contexts of HIV/AIDS in Nepal. It explores the relationship between cognitive schemata and the creation of cultural models of meaning and provides a better understanding of how people incorporate new ideas into established cognitive systems. It is the first long-term field study of the cultural dimensions of HIV/AIDS in South Asia. It is also one of the few ethnographies of HIV/AIDS to emphasize the depth and diversity of the people's view and construction of the emerging illness.

    This report presents the main findings of a comprehensive assessment of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector in Nepal. The report focuses on the following three key questions: What is the actual and likely impact of HIV/AIDS on teachers and other MOES staff? What is the actual and likely impact on the education of primary and secondary school students who are directly affected by the epidemic? What has been and what should be done in the future to prevent HIV infection among teachers and students as well as support for all those who are directly affected by the epidemic?

  15. Drug use and HIV/AIDS: UNAIDS statement presented at the United Nations General Assembly special session on drugs

    AIDS is a significant public health threat worldwide. In many parts of the world, the use of injected drugs is a major mode of HIV transmission. Given the relationship between intravenous drug use and HIV infection, efforts must be made to reduce risks of infection among individuals and communities through advocacy and HIV/AIDS prevention programmes among drug users.
