    This publication deals with current sexual and reproductive health issues. In this issue, a range of themes related to peer education are tackled, including its theoretical foundations and models; its role in battling STIs/HIV/AIDS in Denmark and the Russian Federation; theatre as a peer-led approach in central and eastern Europe; Hungary's approach to sex education; and the role of medical students in providing peer education.

  3. HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge, Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors as Predictors of Condom Use Among Young Adults in Croatia

    This report looks at data from a multistage probability sample of 1,093 Croatian youth aged 18-24 years in 2005. Regression was used to investigate relationships between HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and sexual behavior and condom use at first and last sexual encounter and consistent use of condoms. Results found that positive attitudes towards condoms and condom use at first intercourse were predictors for condom use at most recent intercourse and overall consistent use of condoms (OR: 1.3). Sex education programs should be given to youth before they become sexually active.

    This is Malta's first national policy for sexual health. It illustrates the determination and commitment to address key challenges faced by Maltese society today, which are largely characterised by increased individualisation and the secularisation of sexuality. The aim of the policy is to inform and direct the development of a comprehensive evidence based national sexual health strategy for the attainment of maximum health and well being of all the population.

  5. Understanding Women's HIV Risk Perception in Postsocialist Georgia: Role of Knowledge, Behavioral, and Contextual Factors

    This dissertation explores the influences of HIV knowledge, health behaviors, and context-specific socioeconomic and sociocultural factors on HIV perceived risk among women in the Republic of Georgia. For effective HIV/AIDS prevention, individuals who perceive themselves at some risk of contracting HIV are more likely to reduce risk behaviors. Theories of health behavior incorporate perceived risk as an important component of HIV prevention, but they fail to incorporate factors influencing that risk perception. …

    The document has been developed by SENSOA, the Flemish expert organisation on sexual health and HIV. It is a provisonal synthesis of the direction that sex education should take. It emphasizes the importance of sex education at school, even if there is no censensus about the content of this controversial subject.     This manual, intended for teachers of secondary schools (grades 10-11) is part of an HIV and AIDS education programme called "useful inoculation", which was developed within the project "Healthy Russia 2020" by the authors of the "Project Hope Russia", and implemented in several schools of five Russian regions. The main aim of this programme is to develop the life skills that will allow learners to prevent from HIV and avoid drug use, and also to show empathy and support towards people living with HIV and AIDS.   10. Reproductive rights, advocacy and changing the law

    This issue of journal is about reproductive rights, advocacy and changing the law. Papers on abortion cover the role of political parties and political process in changing the law, the role of feminists and doctors in efforts to get hospitals in the context of restrictive law, and efforts to get nurses and other health workers to confront their own prejudices against abortion in order to make service provision women-centred. Two papers delve into the meaning of reproductive health and rights and the role of advocacy in implementing changes in reproductive health law, policies and services.
