  2. A critical review of the evidence on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education programs for youth in Sub-Saharan Africa

    This paper critically examines the evidence from recent experimental design evaluations on the impact of HIV/AIDS prevention through youth education programs in sub-Saharan Africa. It pre-specifies the study inclusion criteria, the search strategy and the methods for summarizing findings. This paper also identifies recurring flaws in the research and suggests several methods for avoiding these shortcomings in future studies. Our initial search produced 139 potential articles for review, but only six met the pre-stated study inclusion criteria. …

    Many challenges have been encountered in the response to HIV and AIDS, not the least of which is the impact of stigma on the lives of people infected as well as those otherwise affected.     The Young Empowered and Healthy (Y.E.A.H) Initiative is a multi-channel communication campaign by and for young people that combines mass media, person-to-person dialogue, and community media. The mission of Y.E.A.H is to stimulate dialogue and action among communities, families, schools, and health institutions; and model positive practices through local and national media. Y.E.A.H is designed to contribute to a reduction in the incidence of HIV and early pregnancy and to contribute to an increase in the proportion of young people that complete primary education and beyond. …

  8. Scaling-up together we can: a proven peer education program and community mobilization strategy for youth HIV prevention, Guyana, Haiti and Tanzania. Annual report, October 1, 2008-September 30, 2009

    The Scaling Up Together We Can program is a PEPFAR-funded and USAID-supported 6+ year, $10+ million effort to reach more than 1,060,000 youth ages 10 to 24 with curriculum-based and peer-to-peer outreach, and interpersonal community wide events in Guyana, Haiti, and Tanzania. The project has already reached more than one million youth through these interpersonal and participative approaches to relaying HIV prevention messages, and many more through general diffusion "edutainment" events and mass media-based outreach.

  9. It works! Communication for HIV prevention and social change in adolescents: a mid-term review

    Straight Talk Foundation (STF) has worked for 15 years to better the lives of Ugandan adolescents. Its focus has been HIV prevention and improved adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). STF's approach builds on the voices and stories of young people, parents, teachers and health workers to create "conversations" and generate solutions.   10. ICT as the new red ribbon: hot or not? Results of the BELSPO research into digital strategies for HIV and AIDS campaigning in a South African university context

    This research conducted at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) aimed to gain insights into the way in which new technologies could be employed in the fight against HIV and AIDS in a tertiary education context. The overall research question for this case study was: Are new technologies, with their unique characteristics like interactivity and anonymity, appropriate media for innovative HIV and AIDS campaigns in a university context? In other words, are new technologies, computers and the internet in particular, appropriate media for stimulating dialogue and fighting the AIDS fatigue?
