  8. Summary of the National behavioural change strategy for preventing sexual transmission of HIV

    In Zimbabwe HIV is mostly transmitted through sexual contact. It is estimated that around 4 in 5 HIV infections in Zimbabwe are due to sexual transmission. HIV is now also found in all groups of people in the population, implying that all sexually active people are at risk of contracting HIV. Hence, promoting safe sexual behaviours has to be at the heart of HIV prevention in all communities of Zimbabwe. This strategy offers guidance on what actions can be taken to promote and sustain safe sexual behaviours.

    Success stories presented in this report should help the Government, stakeholders and service providers to be more efficient in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The present document describes five best practices selected among the 30 interventions. The first case presented in this document is the intervention implemented in Nyamagabe District. This focuses on sensitization of PAGOR project beneficiaries on HIV/AIDS.     Communication for Change (C-Change) works around the world to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) across program areas, including health, environment, economic growth and poverty alleviation, and democracy and governance.     AIDS continues to have a devastating effect on developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The lack of a proven effective vaccine to stop HIV transmission has led to much of public policy putting an emphasis on information campaigns in order to reduce HIV-prevalence.
