  7. Systematic review of effectiveness of school-based sexual health interventions to prevent STI/HIV in sub-Saharan Africa

    Background: The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains of global significance and there is a need to target (a) the adolescent age-groups in which most new infections occur; and (b) sub-Saharan Africa where the greatest burden of the epidemic lies.   8. Reducing HIV Infection among Youth: What Can Schools Do? Key baseline findings from Mexico, South Africa and Thailand

    This report on the baseline data from three countries (Mexico, Thailand and South Africa) provides information on the HIV-prevention needs of school-based youth. It focuses on select key variables including HIV knowledge, attidudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS, confidence in acquiring and using condoms, and reported sexual behaviour. This information and other data obtained from the studies has helped shape the school-based interventions by informing teachers about student needs.     This report is drawn from findings of a study on the association between awareness of HIV/AIDS and behaviour of RAU students in a social/cultural context. Students' knowledge, awareness and perceptions were determined, and their behaviour was linked to their HIV status. The study included a questionnaire survey coupled with a test for HIV status based on samples of oral fluid (saliva). Questionnaires and samples were anonymous, and provided on the basis of informed consent.
