    Access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in Sub-Saharan Africa has rapidly expanded - from fewer than 10,000 people treated in 2000 to more than 8 million in 2011. To measure the impact of this expansion, it is necessary to identify the behavioral response of individuals to drug access. This paper combines geocoded information about the timing of introduction of ARVs in all Kenyan health facilities with two waves of geocoded population surveys to estimate the impact of proximity to an ARV provider on risky sexual behavior. …

  2. University students and HIV in Namibia: an HIV prevalence survey and a knowledge and attitude survey

    With an overall adult HIV prevalence of 15.3%, Namibia is facing one of the largest HIV epidemics in Africa. Young people aged 20 to 34 years constitute one of the groups at highest risk of HIV infection in Namibia. However, little is known about the impact of HIV on this group and its access to healthcare. The purpose of this study was to estimate HIV prevalence, to assess the knowledge of and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS, and to assess access to healthcare among university students in Namibia.

  3. Courage and Hope. African teachers living positively with HIV

    122,000 teachers in sub-Saharan Africa are estimated to be living with HIV, most of who do not know their status. Stigma remains their greatest challenge. In 2007, a network of African journalists compiled a book entitled “Courage and Hope” telling the first-hand stories of African teachers who are HIV positive and living healthy, active lives as teachers. This film shows some of the stories those journalists discovered. The teachers went through stigma and discrimination and each used their experience to teach a new generation of teachers, what it means to live positively.

    Réaliser par Jérose Eloundou dans la ville de Yaoundé et ses environs "Au Nom de l'Amour" est la traduction en images et en son des préoccupations actuelles de la société camerounaise, face aux erreurs de la jeunesse et la pandémie du SIDA. Cette oeuvre cinématographique interpelle plus d'un congénère, au regard des maux qu'elle revèle. Ce court métrage éducatif est une contribution à la lutte contre la stigmatisation et la discrimination des personnes vivant avec le virus de l'immunodificience humaine.

  7. A Handbook For AIDS Awareness Activities For Clubs

    This manual was designed to support the GRN-UNICEF Youth Health and Development Programme with the aim of sustaining My Future is My Choice graduates and other young people's peer education activities. It was written and reviewed in a three-day workshop in November 1999 and in the following weeks with assistance from participating organizations including AIDS Care Trust, Catholic AIDS action, the National Youth Council of Namibia, Polytechnic of Namibia, the University of Namibia and UNICEF.   8. TIWOLOKE: HIV and AIDS in the education workplace in Malawi

    TIWOLOKE (Stepping Stones) is a workplace-focused behaviour change model targeting primary school teachers in Malawi's education system. Implemented since 2006 by ActionAid in Malawi with support from Malawi's National AIDS Commission and the UK's Department for International Development (DfID), the intervention has reached 7,600 teachers in its first phase. TIWOLOKE has also supported the development of T'LIPO, the country's first national network of teachers living positively with HIV and AIDS, which has recruited 2, 500 teachers since June 2007. …
