    Child marriage violates girls’ human rights and adversely affects their health and well-being. While age at marriage is increasing in most regions of the developing world, early marriage persists for large populations.   5. Evolving Men: Initial Results from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES)

    This report summarizes multi-country findings from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES), a comprehensive household questionnaire on men's attitudes and practices - along with women's opinions and reports of men's practices - on a wide variety of topics related to gender equality. From 2009 to 2010, household surveys were administered to more than 8,000 men and 3,500 women ages 18 to 59 in Brazil, Chile, Croatia, India, Mexico and Rwanda. …

  12. Reducing HIV Infection among Youth: What Can Schools Do? Key baseline findings from Mexico, South Africa and Thailand

    This report on the baseline data from three countries (Mexico, Thailand and South Africa) provides information on the HIV-prevention needs of school-based youth. It focuses on select key variables including HIV knowledge, attidudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS, confidence in acquiring and using condoms, and reported sexual behaviour. This information and other data obtained from the studies has helped shape the school-based interventions by informing teachers about student needs. It can also be helpful to others planning HIV prevention programmes for youth in similar settings.

    This document represents a synthesis of country studies on the cultural approach to HIV/AIDS prevention and care initiated in the context of a UNESCO/UNAIDS research project. The studies aim to identify the interaction between culture, development and the HIV/AIDS problem, in order to adopt the appropriate preventive actions and care. More than a simple synthesis, the document identifies general trends within the different cultures with regard to risk perception, the complexity of AIDS, its socio-cultural and multidimensional impact. The document explores also the cultural diversity and identifies vulnerable groups within a society and culture. Lessons learned and recommendations have been formulated based on the data collected.
