  2. Breaking a spell of silence: the Tasmanian evaluation of the 2006 Pride and Prejudice program

    An evaluation of the Pride & Prejudice program, which ran in three Tasmanian schools in 2006, suggests that students who completed the program had more positive attitudes towards gay men and lesbians. This finding parallels an earlier evaluation of the same anti-homophobia program undertaken in Victoria. The evaluation leads to a discussion about the deeper and often hidden purposes of schooling, and about the discursive formations of heteronormativity, which provide a heterosexist basis for ‘curriculum’. …

  3. Postgraduate educational research on violence, gender, and HIV/AIDS in and around schools (1995-2004)

    Social issues such as HIV/AIDS, bullying, and violence have recently come to the fore in schooling and related research in South Africa. This article describes and critically analyses Masters and Ph.D. research done in education in the period 1995–2004, with particular reference to the voice given to social issues, namely: gender, violence, and HIV/AIDS and their interconnectedness. It explores issues, trends, and patterns in research emerging in the first decade of democracy in South Africa.

    Court métrage de l'un des 5 lauréats du concours "Jeune et homo sous le regard des autres" organisé par le Ministère de la Santé et des Sports. Pour éclairer la vidéo, le livret d'accompagnement. Lors d'une séance du jeu « Action ou vérité ? », deux jeunes garçons, Mathieu et Maxime, ont pour défi de s'embrasser. Le baiser va provoquer chez eux un certain émoi. À partir de ce moment, les ados, témoins de cette scène, font des allusions plus ou moins directes à l'éventuelle homosexualité de Maxime. Une révélation surprenante va alors déstabiliser le groupe, mais surtout le faire réfléchir.

  6. Establishing an association between rural youth suicide and same-sex attraction

    Recent research into same-sex attracted youth (SSAY) suicide and rural youth suicide suggests there may be an association between the two. A literature review explores this proposal. While contributing issues to rural SSAY suicide, such as homophobia, isolation, avaibility of information, and acknowledgement of issues are discussed, little hard evidence is found to support the rural and SSAY suicide connection. Further and on-going research is recommended into this under-represented topic.

  7. Different families: the experiences of children with lesbian and gay parents

    This research provides pioneering understanding of the current experience of the children of lesbian and gay parents. Many come from families which look remarkably like everyone else's. However, their lived experience is often similar to that of so many black or Asian or Jewish children. It's the prejudices of others that cause them far more distress than their own personal or family characteristics. Having interviewed children as young as four, this study also provides groundbreaking insights into the existence of homophobia in Britain's schools, including primary schools. …

    Bullying causes permanent damage to young people and blights the schools and colleges where it takes place. One of the most invisible forms is homophobic bullying. But it's not just a gay issue. Homophobia affects all pupils and students - lesbian, gay, bisexual and straight. Anti-bullying campaigns need to understand and address this.
