    The national BCC strategy was developed in collaboration with HIV and AIDS stakeholders and has since been disseminated at national and district levels. The strategy is one of the prevention oriented implementation components on HIV and AIDS for the country as outlined in the National Strategic Plan. Changing of high risk behaviours has been identified as one of the critical prevention tools for reducing new HIV infections.   3. Tackling HIV/AIDS: Mass-media and international conferences. Soul City, Going to scale across borders: the Choose Life project

    Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

    This is an evidence-based review of Lesotho's epidemiological situation (Know your epidemic, KYE) and national HIV prevention response (Know your response, KYR). The purpose of this modes of transmission (MoT) study is to contribute to the ongoing efforts to understand the epidemic and response in Lesotho and thus help the country improve the scope (doing the right kind of activities), relevance (with the right populations) and comprehensiveness (reaching all members of target populations) of HIV prevention efforts. …

  6. The determinants of HIV infection and related sexual behaviours: evidence from Lesotho

    This paper analyzes the socioeconomic determinants of HIV infection and related sexual behaviors using the 2004 Lesotho Demographic and Health Survey. The authors find that in Lesotho education appears to have a protective effect: it is negatively associated with HIV infection (although not always significantly) and it strongly predicts preventive behaviors. The findings also show that married women who have extra-marital relationships are less likely to use a condom than non-married women. This is an important source of vulnerability that should be addressed in prevention efforts. …
