    This study takes stock of recent developments in a number of South and South-east Asian countries in relation to the issue of sexual orientation and gender identity. It provides a welcome update of positive initiatives from various national human rights institutions, in addressing the discrimination, stigmatization and violations facing individuals and groups who simply wish “to be” what they actually are. These initiatives include research, advocacy, education, public mobilization, and contributions to judicial decisions, laws, policies and other processes to protect human rights.

  4. Lesbian teachers' identity, power and the public/private boundary

    This article examines lesbian teachers' negotiation of the public/private boundary in the school, focusing on identity management in the context of the heterosexualised space of this public institution. The study is based on interviews conducted with six lesbian teachers working in London secondary schools. I examine the teachers' responses, and the ways in which they mediate the ‘polite’ silences in relation to lesbian and gay sexuality, as situated in a framework of liberal tolerance found in public and political domains. …

  5. Working with transgender children and their classmates in pre-adolescence: Just be supportive

    This study documents a school district’s coordinated response to an elementary student’s social transition from a gender variant boy to a female gender expression. Data were gathered through analysis of journal entries, lesson plans, and interviews with the child, guardian, and district personnel. Stakeholders reported a favorable outlook on the transition, particularly in the areas of classroom and school interventions, peer involvement, and maintaining safety for all.   6. Universal access from vulnerability to resilience: the Latin American and Caribbean strategic framework for strengthening national responses to HIV for gay men, other MSM and trans people

    This Regional Strategic Framework focuses on three core issues that are of utmost importance for the realization of the MDG 6 in Latin America and the Caribbean: evidence, human rights and capacity. Effective responses to HIV epidemics require robust and reliable information about who is affected by HIV and about what works in prevention and care. Effective responses also require attention to stigma and discrimination, which continue to undermine commitments and responses from both affected populations and community leaders. …
