Around 90% of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa, where 12.1 million children are estimated to have lost one or both parents to AIDS. The objective of this publication is to provide a compilation of various research findings on the impact of HIV/AIDS on education in countries south of the Sahara, which is the world's most infected region. It also presents different options available to the education ministries and government decision-makers with regard to the use of education as an instrument to mitigate the effect of HIV/AIDS, as well as a tool for its prevention.
The international workshop "Protecting the rights of young children affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in Africa: Updating strategies and reinforcing existing networks" took place in UNESCO Headquarters co-organized by UNESCO and the Early Childhood Development Network for Africa (ECDNA) bringing together representatives of early childhood development NGOs, institutions and UN organizations working in Africa on issues of young children and HIV/AIDS, to identify strategies, lines of action and innovative approaches to respond to the needs of young children faced by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Young children impacted by HIV/AIDS often seem to be almost invisible in the wider HIV/AIDS field. Yet no affected group is more vulnerable, more deserving or has greater potential to benefit from proper programming. This article discusses the importance of situation analysis in the process of formulating interventions for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. The argument is that for interventions to be effective and resources to be well used, it is essential that interventions are developed with a clear understanding of the factors which are most significant and how they relate to each other in causing or mitigating problems. It is well argued how situation analysis and ongoing monitoring are essental to planning and implementing effective interventions.
