  3. The cost and cost-effectiveness of gender-responsive interventions for HIV: a systematic review

    Introduction: Harmful gender norms and inequalities, including gender-based violence, are important structural barriers to effective HIV programming. We assess current evidence on what forms of gender-responsive intervention may enhance the effectiveness of basic HIV programmes and be cost-effective. Methods: Effective intervention models were identified from an existing evidence review (“what works for women”). Based on this, we conducted a systematic review of published and grey literature on the costs and cost-effectiveness of each intervention identified. …

    Globally, girls and young women are more likely to be HIV positive than their male peers, due in large part to an array of gender inequalities that negatively impact their mental and physical well being.   6. Aunties for sexual and reproductive health. How unwed young mothers become advocates, teachers and counsellors in Cameroon

    In Cameroon, a girl's Auntie used to be her most trusted confidante, teacher and counsellor on sexual matters. In 2001, GTZ launched the Aunties Programme which borrows from this tradition. Since then, the Programme has recruited more than 6000 unwed young mothers who got pregnant while still in their teens and has given them basic training in sexual and reproductive health. …

  10. Opening windows to a brighter world: a better future for girls and boys orphaned through AIDS

    In October, 1999, UNESCO hosted a Round Table discussion on the plight of children whose parents have died from AIDS. This brought together representatives from some of the hardest hit countries, as well as NGOs in the field. The Round Table provided a platform for dialogue and exchange. The problems faced by the orphans were discussed, and experiences shared. Recommendations and strategies for intervention were proposed.The two-day discussion revealed the difficulties faced by individuals, communities and organizations, and pointed out the efforts needed. …
