  1. Orphans and vulnerable children: national plan of action 2006-2010

    This five-year costed National Plan of Action addresses the survival, protection, care and support needs of the most vulnerable children in Nigeria. It was developed through consultative and participatory approaches among all stakeholders, including adults and children. The voices of children were heard, and their contributions were taken into account. The Plan adopts a rights-based approach in the development of the framework that will accelerate and provide guidance for the national response on orphans and vulnerable children.

  2. Breaking through the clouds : a Participatory Action Research (PAR) Project with migrant children and youth along the borders of China, Myanmar and Thailand

    A report on the Participatory Action Research (PAR) project implemented by Save the Children's Southeast & East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office during April 1999 to March 2001 with funding from the Department of International Development (UK). The PAR project is a new approach to learning, documenting and developing potential for change. The participants of PAR project strongly recommend this approach as an effective way to address sensitive issues to children and youth in vulnerable situations.

  3. The impact of an adult child's death due to AIDS on older-aged parent: results from a direct interview survey

    The report describes the methodology and findings of a direct interview survey in Thailand of parents of deceased adult children who died of AIDS and a comparison group of older age parents who had not suffered such a loss. The results provide extensive information on living arrangements; parental care giving; health impacts; spouses and orphaned children; care, treatment and funeral expense; longer term economic impacts; and community reaction.

  4. Youth and HIV/AIDS: choices, leadership, and survival

    The document contains quotes from youth, facts and statistics, information linking AIDS to the issues under discussion at the World Youth Forum, and the Youth Position Paper from the UN Special Session on AIDS.

  5. Sex and youth: contextual factors affecting risk for HIV/AIDS. A comparative analysis of multi-site studies in developing countries

    The report identifies the principal findings from each of the three studies along with policy and practice implication. The three studies are: Young people and risk-taking in sexual relations; Community responses to AIDS; Use of the female condom: genders relations and sexual negotiation.

  6. Youth in the Philippines : a review of the youth situation and national policies and programmes

    The monograph contains six chapters: youth development; youth education; youth health; youth employment; youth participation; and conclusions and recommendations. The first chapter on youth development provides an overview of youth participation in national development followed by a review of the national youth policy and programmes. Each of the three chapters on education, health and employment begin with an analysis of policy and followed by a quantitative and a qualitative analysis on youth issues in the relevant area.

  7. Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers: Do they matter for children and young people made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS? Results of a joint UNICEF and World Bank review.

    It is widely agreed that HIV/AIDS should be prominent in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) of African countries in light of the challenge the pandemic poses to poverty reduction efforts. A desk review of PRSPs and National Strategic Plans on HIV/AIDS was therefore conducted to assess how HIV/AIDS is being addressed in PRSPs. …

  8. Building blocks: Asia. Briefing notes for communities working with orphans and vulnerable children

    Building Blocks: Asia is a series of practical briefing notes to assist policy-makers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community-based organisations (CBOs), local government and communities to respond to the needs of children affected by HIV and AIDS in Asia. The development of the guides followed a similar process to the “Building Blocks Africa-wide briefing notes”, while developing completely new guidance based on regional priorities.
