  1. The Government of Kenya’s Cash Transfer Program Reduces the Risk of Sexual Debut among Young People Age 15-25

    The aim of this study is to assess whether the Government of Kenya’s Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (Kenya CT-OVC) can reduce the risk of HIV among young people by postponing sexual debut. The program provides an unconditional transfer of US$20 per month directly to the main caregiver in the household. An evaluation of the program was implemented in 2007–2009 in seven districts. Fourteen Locations were randomly assigned to receive the program and fourteen were assigned to a control arm. A sample of households was enrolled in the evaluation in 2007. …

    The Global AIDS Response Progress Report 2014 provides an appraisal of progress towards achieving High Level Meeting (HLMs) targets set in 2001. Zimbabwe participated in the high level meeting during the 65th Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in June 2011 to review progress made in the HIV and AIDS response since 2001.     The SADC Epidemic Update Report provides an appraisal of progress towards the Maseru Declaration. Zimbabwe participated at the SADC meeting in November 2012, where representatives pledged to produce HIV and AIDS Epidemic Update Reports in order review progress made in the HIV and AIDS response. The data gathering and report writing process was coordinated by National AIDS Council. Data gathering and validation meetings were held with partners.     To assist Member States in preparing and submitting their 2010 Country Progress reports, UNAIDS has released the new UNGASS Guidelines on Construction of Core Indicators for 2010 reporting. The new guidelines provide essential information on the composition of core indicators for reporting including the purpose of the indicator, methods of measurement and a summary interpretation of the indicator. The guidelines are also intended to ensure consistency of information across countries for accurate global progress analysis.

  7. Educational access and HIV prevention: Making the case for education as a health priority in sub-Saharan Africa

    There is much evidence showing an association between sexual behavior and both attendance and attainment. Experimental evidence that school attendance leads to safer sexual behavior is currently under review. Studies suggest several pathways through which sexual behavior, and consequently the risk of HIV infection, may be influenced by schooling. Students attending school have a smaller sexual network and a stronger motivation to avoid the consequences of unprotected sex - both pregnancy and HIV infection - than their out-of-school peers.

  8. The second national multi-sectoral strategic framework on HIV and AIDS (2008-2012)

    The second National Multi-sectoral Strategic Framework (NMSF) on HIV and AIDS covers the period 2008 to 2012. It builds on the achievements and strengths of the National Response to the HIV epidemic in the last five years (2003-2007) and proposes measures and strategies to overcome past barriers and constraints. This NMSF guides the approaches, interventions and activities which will be undertaken by all actors in the country. The framework was developed through an extensive review and consultation process under the guidance of the national and international consultants.

    This report reviews the documents on behaviour and the epidemic in Swaziland in an attempt to establish what is driving the epidemic. It asks 'What is driving the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Swaziland? What more can we do about it?' Our conclusion is that the epidemic in Swaziland is very serious, but we know what is going on. There are some gaps in the research that need to be addressed but there is enough information available now to act. The workshop we held confirmed this.     IIEP and its partner ministries of education launched the collaborative action research programme was launched in 2003. This initiative is designed to contribute to mitigation and prevention of the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in three countries - Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda.     This policy document provides a policy framework that will guide partners, both national and external, in efforts to prevent the further spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and to reduce its impact on affected individuals, their families and the community at large. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), HIV/AIDS has particularly affected sub-Saharan Africa, with 28.5 million people estimated to be living with the virus in the region by 2001 (UNAIDS, 2001). This figure represents approximately 71% of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the world. About 81% of all HIV-infected women and 79% of all HIV/AIDS orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa. …
