  3. Rwandan young people's perceptions on sexuality and relationships: Results from a qualitative study using the ‘mailbox technique’

    This study aimed to gain more insight into young Rwandans' perceptions on sex and relationships, which is essential for formulating effective sexual and reproductive health (SRH) promotion interventions. Using a 'mailbox technique', this paper studies the spontaneous thoughts of Rwandan young people on sexuality. Mailboxes were installed in five secondary schools in the Bugesera district and students were invited to write about their ideas, secrets, wishes, desires and fears on sexuality and relationships.   4. Effective approaches for programming to reduce adolescent vulnerability to HIV infection, HIV risk, and HIV-related morbidity and mortality: A systematic review of systematic reviews

    Background: In 2012, an estimated 2.1 million adolescents were living with HIV. Though there are effective interventions to prevent and treat HIV infection, adolescents face specific barriers in accessing them. As a result, new infections and poor outcomes among HIV-infected adolescents are common. HIV programming for adolescents should focus on interventions of proven effectiveness and address underlying factors driving incidence and lack of effective treatment and care in this age group. …

  5. The Government of Kenya’s Cash Transfer Program Reduces the Risk of Sexual Debut among Young People Age 15-25

    The aim of this study is to assess whether the Government of Kenya’s Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (Kenya CT-OVC) can reduce the risk of HIV among young people by postponing sexual debut. The program provides an unconditional transfer of US$20 per month directly to the main caregiver in the household. An evaluation of the program was implemented in 2007–2009 in seven districts. Fourteen Locations were randomly assigned to receive the program and fourteen were assigned to a control arm. A sample of households was enrolled in the evaluation in 2007. …

  6. Young people's sexual health in South Africa: HIV prevalence and sexual behaviors from a nationally representative household surevy

    Objectives: To determine the prevalence of HIV infection, HIV risk factors, and exposure to national HIV prevention programs, and to identify factors associated with HIV infection among South African youth, aged 15–24 years. Design: A cross-sectional, nationally representative, household survey. Methods: From March to August 2003 we conducted a national survey of HIV prevalence and sexual behavior among 11 904 15–24 year olds.   7. Scrutinize campaign: a youth HIV prevention campaign addressing multiple and concurrent partnerships

    Launched on South African television in June 2008, the Scrutinize Campaign was a year-long series of HIV prevention ads targeting multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. Irreverent and humorous, with strong, colorful visuals, the campaign's ads were markedly different from previous South African HIV prevention campaigns for youth. Rather than telling the audience what to do, the Scrutinize campaign messaging encouraged those in the audience to scrutinize their own behavior, resulting in dramatic uptake of key HIV prevention messages.

  8. HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge, Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors as Predictors of Condom Use Among Young Adults in Croatia

    This report looks at data from a multistage probability sample of 1,093 Croatian youth aged 18-24 years in 2005. Regression was used to investigate relationships between HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and sexual behavior and condom use at first and last sexual encounter and consistent use of condoms. Results found that positive attitudes towards condoms and condom use at first intercourse were predictors for condom use at most recent intercourse and overall consistent use of condoms (OR: 1.3). Sex education programs should be given to youth before they become sexually active.

  9. Most at Risk Young People Survey Cambodia 2010

    Cambodia's Most at Risk Young People Survey (MARYPS) 2010 is a follow up survey of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2004. The survey provides the policymakers and planners with data on alcohol, drug and sex related behaviors and utilization of sexual and reproductive health services among MARYP. This survey is jointly supported by FHI, PSI, UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO.

    This document is divided into six parts (Part I-VI). Part I covers (a) the study background including objectives, methodologies and activities; and (b) an overview of the HIV situation among young people and adolescents in the Africa region.   11. Prevention of HIV/AIDS among young people in Bangladesh: improving access to life skills based sexual and reproductive health education and condom services for male youth

    Around the world youth often do not have access to basic sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information, skills in negotiating sexual relationships and access to affordable confidential SRH services. They lack proper knowledge about their own or their partners' sexuality, communicate very little about sex in their relationships, and believe in numerous sexual myths.   12. A Multi-level Model of Sexual Behavior among Young people in Nyanza, Kenya

    Using data collected from 3645 sexually active grade 6 and 7 students from 160 schools and applying hierarchical linear models, this study estimates the impact of individual, school and community level variables on condom use among sexually experienced young people in Nyanza, Kenya. Based on the findings, the document recommends that AIDS prevention interventions take account not only of individual-level factors, but also school and community influences on the sexual behaviours of youth.

  15. HIV prevention for young people in developing countries: report of a technical meeting

    A report of technical meeting co-sponsored by USAID Office of HIV/AIDS, the Institute for Youth Development, and YouthNet/Family Health International held in Washington DC on July 24, 2003. The objectives of the meeting were to share state-of-the-art research and programmatic experiences relating to HIV prevention among young people, and to provide an opportunity for dialogue across groups from different academic disciplines and philosophical perspectives on strategies for HIV prevention among youth.
