    There is growing recognition that primary prevention, including behavior change, must be central in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The earlier successes in Thailand and Uganda may not be fully relevant to the severely affected countries of southern Africa. We conducted an extensive multi-disciplinary synthesis of the available data on the causes of the remarkable HIV decline that has occurred in Zimbabwe (29% estimated adult prevalence in 1997 to 16% in 2007), in the context of severe social, political, and economic disruption. …

  3. Priority interventions to reduce HIV transmission in sex work settings in sub-Saharan Africa and delivery of these services

    Introduction: Virtually no African country provides HIV prevention services in sex work settings with an adequate scale and intensity. Uncertainty remains about the optimal set of interventions and mode of delivery. Methods: We systematically reviewed studies reporting interventions for reducing HIV transmission among female sex workers in sub-Saharan Africa between January 2000 and July 2011.   4. The sexual behaviour of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: patterns and trends from national surveys

    Objectives: To describe the sexual and reproductive behaviour of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly 15- to 19-year-olds. Methods: Using DHS/AIS data (2000–2010), nine indicators of adolescent behaviour and one of adult attitudes towards condom education for adolescents were described for 24 countries. Indicators were disaggregated by gender, urban/rural residency and educational status, and time trends were described. Results: Up to 25% of 15- to 19-year-olds reported sex before age 15; this proportion shrank over time in many countries. …

  5. International and local good practice in workplace HIV and AIDS programme: a desktop review, 2009

    This report aims to identify and describe what is considered good practice as regards workplace HIV programmes. It is anticipated that the findings will feed into the national-level Higher Education Workplace HIV and AIDS Programme Framework and down into the Higher Education Institution (HEI)-specific workplace programmes.

    This report presents the findings of a desk study undertaken to assess the integration of gender and human rights in HIV-related documents and processes in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It highlights best practices, lessons learned, and areas for future action.   7. Does knowledge equal change? HIV/AIDS education and behaviour change

    This paper sets out to demonstrate that clear links exist between HIV/AIDS education, both inside and outside the education system, and levels of awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS and associated risk behaviour. It also examines evidence of consequent behaviour change in relation to such information and linked understanding of the risks posed by HIV/AIDS.
