    Young women's ability to pursue a safer-sex life in line with their wishes is crucial to their sexual health. Although some previous observations have suggested that young women's lack of ability to negotiate safer sex is due to gender power imbalances in the culture of Vietnam, studies that have tested this hypothesis explicitly and quantitatively are few and far between. It draws upon data from the 2002 Cameroon Adolescent Reproductive Health Survey to analyse the determinants of young women's perceived ability to refuse sex in urban Cameroon. Young women's status characteristics predict their vulnerability differently under different circumstances, and young women report having a lower ability to refuse sex in their relationships with men in positions of power over them. …

  9. Adolescent' girls' life aspirations and reproductive health in Nepal

    The study described in this paper takes a participatory and positive approach to improving adolescent reproductive health in a rural and urban community in Nepal. It shows that adolescent girls in these communities have dreams and aspirations for a better future and that adults acknowledge and support these ideals. However, social norms and institutions are restrictive, especially for girls, who are often unable to realise their hopes for continuing education, finding better-paid work or delaying marriage and childbearing, and this directly impacts reproductive outcomes. …

    The qualitative research study examines the contraceptive practices and understanding of women in Quirino Province, Philippines that have led many women to discontinue use of contraception even though they do not wish to become pregnant. Three factors are examined for their impact on contraceptive use behaviour; occurrence of side effects, spousal relations, and quality of care.
