  1. Dignity denied: violations of the rights of HIV-positive women in Chilean health facilities

    Dignity Denied documents the systemic discrimination and abuse that HIV-positive women endure in Chilean health facilities. Based on women's testimonies and those of healthcare providers, this report exposes the discriminatory and often dehumanizing experiences that Chilean women living with HIV/AIDS face when seeking healthcare, including failures to protect patient confidentiality, lack of adequate pre- and post-test counseling, delayed or abusive treatment, pressure to not bear children, and coercive and forced sterilization.

    O presente relatório apresenta os resultados da pesquisa etnográfica realizada nos distritos de Ribáuè, Mossuril, Nhamatanda e Zavala sobre as práticas culturais e comunitárias de promoção de Saúde Sexual e Reprodutiva. A pesquisa adoptou uma abordagem etnográfica e qualitativa centrada na abordagem sociocultural. A recolha de dados foi feita através da realização de entrevistas individuais, grupos de discussão focal e observação directa estruturada, abarcando as províncias de Nampula, Sofala e Inhambane.

    This report reflects Amnesty International's recent analysis on the extent to which certain Indonesian laws have incorporated international human rights law and standards, including provisions contained in CEDAW, to which Indonesia is a state party. In particular, it builds on a series of open letters addressed to Indonesian authorities in late 2009 and early 2010, which highlighted some of the shortcomings of certain laws in guaranteeing non-discrimination and sexual and reproductive rights. …

  4. The Girl Effect: What Do Boys Have to Do with It?

    This paper argues for a gender and developmental perspective to explore "what boys have to do with the 'girl effect'." This approach seeks to combine the lenses of gender and developmental psychology to better understand gendered behavior in adolescents over their life cycle, with a focus on adolescence (generally defined as ages 10 to 19) in order to develop programs and undertake policy efforts to promote equitable and healthy gender identities and norms with benefits for both girls and boys in a gender relational perspective.

  5. Understanding Women's HIV Risk Perception in Postsocialist Georgia: Role of Knowledge, Behavioral, and Contextual Factors

    This dissertation explores the influences of HIV knowledge, health behaviors, and context-specific socioeconomic and sociocultural factors on HIV perceived risk among women in the Republic of Georgia. For effective HIV/AIDS prevention, individuals who perceive themselves at some risk of contracting HIV are more likely to reduce risk behaviors. Theories of health behavior incorporate perceived risk as an important component of HIV prevention, but they fail to incorporate factors influencing that risk perception. …

  10. Knowledge, attitudes and practices concerning HIV/AIDS among Iranian at-risk sub-populations

    This study in 2003 looked at knowledge, attitudes and behaviours concerning HIV among 3 high-risk groups (201 cross-border truck drivers, 50 female sex workers and 754 youths) in 4 cities in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The level of knowledge about HIV was low on average, especially among individuals with high-risk behaviours. Truck drivers and female sex workers had higher knowledge about sexually transmitted infections than youths but their knowledge came primarily from personal experience rather than public awareness programmes. …

  11. You still need to give her a token of appreciation: the meaning of the exchange of money in the sexual relationships of out-of-school adolescents in rural southwest Uganda

    This article challenges the pervasive assumption that exchanging gifts and money in adolescent sexual relationships is transactional. Data were derived from a multi-method, qualitative sexual health needs assessment of 31 out-of-school adolescents in rural southwest Uganda. Grounded theory analysis allows contextual meanings of exchange to emerge. Adolescents have developed gendered courting and exchange models that parallel marital relationships in this cultural context. …
