    In South Africa, first year university students are vulnerable and at a high risk, of HIV infection the other group need immediate intervention because they might be sexually active and have established patterns of risky sexually behaviour. The number of students infected with HIV/ AIDS-related illness is increasing and this affects institution negatively. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine whether the integration of HIV/AIDS into the curriculum can reduce or minimise the infection rate among students. …

    Despite significant global efforts to mitigate HIV and AIDS, the epidemic continues to be a serious problem to the human race. It has claimed many productive individuals, including teachers, administrators, and parents, and has left millions of traumatized and orphaned children.     This booklet is the sixth in a series of publications that address key themes of UNESCO's work on HIV & AIDS and the education sector. It synthesizes lessons learnt, activities, case studies, policies and practices in HIV-related pre-service teacher education and training. The guide concerns the key role pre-service teacher training has in preparing future teachers to deliver effective sexuality education and HIV prevention education to children and young people in education institutions.

  7. Sexuality and HIV education: time for a paradigm shift

    While we have learned a good deal about effective sexuality and HIV education, we can do much better. Several areas of research suggest that it is time to develop and test a "social studies" approach to sex and HIV education - one that starts earlier and fosters critical thinking skills, gender equality, and human rights. Such an effort may have important lessons for improved sexual and reproductive health outcomes and contribute to other aspects of young people's preparation for active, informed participation in civil society.

    The EDUCAIDS Overviews of Practical Resources provide guidance on the technical and operational aspects of this response. They are intended for technical staff, programme implementers and managers in ministries of education, technical staff in UN and other development cooperation agencies, and civil society partners.   11. Review of sex, relationships and HIV education in schools

    In 2007, UNESCO commissioned this desk-based review of the global state of sex and HIV education in the formal education sector in order to inform its possible future work in this area. The review is based on twenty-two key informant interviews with experts from Africa, Europe and North and South America, together with searches of published and grey literature obtained from the internet, databases and personal recommendation, as well as manual searching of key journals. …
