    An evaluation of the Pride & Prejudice program, which ran in three Tasmanian schools in 2006, suggests that students who completed the program had more positive attitudes towards gay men and lesbians. This finding parallels an earlier evaluation of the same anti-homophobia program undertaken in Victoria. The evaluation leads to a discussion about the deeper and often hidden purposes of schooling, and about the discursive formations of heteronormativity, which provide a heterosexist basis for ‘curriculum’. …

  2. Lesbian, gay and bisexual citizenship: a case study as represented in a sample of South African life orientation textbooks

    Over the past two decades, sexual citizenship has emerged as a new form of citizenship coupled with increased interest in the challenges to citizenship and social justice faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people and, in particular, by sexual minority youth within education systems. In South Africa, the rights of LGBTI people have been institutionalized by legislation, and research has begun to consider how educators may facilitate a more inclusive school environment for LGBTI youth. …

  3. Peer education in HIV prevention: an evaluation in schools

    Peer education is increasingly being used to increase HIV and AIDS awareness among youth. This pilot cohort study tested the effectiveness of this approach among high school students in 10 schools in Athens, Greece. Over one year, 702 students were followed (n = 493 experimental group, n = 209 control group) and knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and practices assessed through a pre and post intervention questionnaire. Students in the intervention group were moderately more empowered to take personal responsibility and adopt safer sexual practices. …

  4. The response of the education sector in Jamaica to HIV and AIDS

    This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Jamaica's current and planned response to HIV and AIDS in the education sector, highlighting strengths and critical gaps. It outlines parameters for a strategic planning exercise that will develop an action plan for the period 2006-2010 for the education sector which in turn will contribute to the preparation of the National AIDS strategy for the same 5 year period. The report is based on data obtained through a review of documents, stakeholder interviews and field visits in Kingston, Browns Town and Ocho Rios. …
