  3. Evaluation of the implementation of Family Life and HIV Education Programme in Nigeria

    Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) programme was introduced nationwide in Nigeria in 2003. Since then little is known about the patterns of its implementation across the states in the six geo-political zones in Nigeria. This study represents an attempt to fill this lacuna in the FLHE literature in Nigeria. Quantitative data was collected from the Federal Ministry of Education and the State Ministries of Education on all salient aspects of FLHE implementation. …

  4. Report of an evaluation of relationships and sexuality education in post-primary schools

    This report summarises the findings of an evaluation, of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) in post-primary schools in Northern Ireland (NI) by the Education and Training Inspectorate (Inspectorate). The objectives of the evaluation were to: evaluate the quality of the provision for RSE within schools; report on the quality of the provision for staff training for RSE; record examples of good practice; and identify areas for development within RSE.

  5. Sex and HIV education programs: Their impact on sexual behaviors of young people throughout the world

    This paper reviews 83 studies that measure the impact of curriculum-based sex and HIV education programs on sexual behavior and mediating factors among youth under 25 years anywhere in the world. Two thirds of the programs significantly improved one or more sexual behaviors. The evidence is strong that programs do not hasten or increase sexual behavior but, instead, some programs delay or decrease sexual behaviors or increase condom or contraceptive use. …

  6. Sexuality education: a ten-country review of school curricula in East and Southern Africa

    This collaborative regional curriculum scan, which was conducted in 2011, seeks to assess the content, quality, and delivery methods of sexuality education curricula in ten ESA countries and aims to ensure that the reviews help countries to develop curricula designed to not only increase comprehensive knowledge among young people, but to empower them to adopt protective behaviours, such as refusing unwanted sex, delaying sex, using condoms and testing for HIV. The ten countries included are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  7. Assessment life-skills based curriculum in Lao PDR

    According to the 2010 UNGASS Country Progress Report, Lao PDR is the only country in the Greater Mekong Region with a continuing low HIV prevalence. However, the report makes it clear that the country is “continuously vulnerable to an expanding epidemic” and that a key reason for this is increasing high-risk behaviour among the youth, in particular the use of drugs and alcohol. …

  8. Empowering teachers to change youth practices: evaluating teacher delivery and responses to the FLHE Programme in Edo State, Nigeria

    School-based programming is one of the most common approaches to HIV/AIDS prevention among youth. This paper presents the history and development of the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) programme in Edo State, Nigeria and results of evaluation of teacher actions and responses to training in its delivery. Results indicate that teachers benefited from the training, were aware of new and/or existing teaching resources and began to teach about HIV/AIDS. Teachers expressed that the programme facilitated open dialogue about HIV/AIDS. …

  9. Documentation of advocacy work on comprehensive sexuality education in Nepal

    The goal of the project was to ensure the integration and implementation of comprehensive, gender-sensitive and rights-based sexuality education through the national curricula (primary and secondary) in Nepal. The project focused on the creation of sustainable advocacy networks with stakeholders to promote comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and undertake a national advocacy campaign. It worked with key stakeholders to adopt a broad based sexuality education curriculum and build skills to ensure its effective implementation. …

  13. Evaluation of the Pilot Health and Family Life Education Curriculum Schools

    Between January and June 2006, the Ministry of Education, supported by UNICEF and the Global Fund through the Ministry of Health, conducted the delivery of a pilot curriculum for Health and Family Life Education [HFLE] in 21 of 24 selected schools. The HFLE curriculum which was pilot tested was developed in the context of an existing National Policy for Health and Family Life Education in Jamaica. The Policy was revised in 1999. The spread of HIV/AIDS has led to the special inclusion of HIV/AIDS education as a special focus of HFLE. …

  14. The Impact of Sex and HIV Education Programs in Schools and Communities on Sexual Behaviors among Young Adults

    Sex and HIV education programs that are based on a written curriculum and that are implemented among groups of youth in schools, clinics, or other community settings are a promising type of intervention to reduce adolescent sexual risk behaviors. This paper summarizes a review of 83 evaluations of such programs in developing and developed countries. The programs typically focused on pregnancy or HIV/STI prevention behaviors, not on broader issues of sexuality such as developmental stages, gender roles, or romantic relationships. …

  15. Strengthening health and family life education in the region: the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of HFLE in four CARICOM countries

    Globally, several studies have pointed to the positive impact that life skills-based health education programmes have on the attitudes and behaviours of young people, but no such evaluation had been conducted in the Caribbean. With the development of a Regional Curriculum Framework to support the delivery of Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) in CARICOM countries, it was considered an opportune time to not only monitor the implementation of the Framework but to also assess its impact on students. …
