    Comprehending praxis is a critical step in developing interventions that can have a real-world impact on people's lives. In this paper, we reflect on the lessons learned in the development of a curriculum for young people living in informal settlements in eThekwini, who are exposed to numerous vulnerabilities, including HIV-related risks associated with precarious urban livelihoods. Behavioural interventions have not led to commensurate reductions in HIV incidence, and the impact of these approaches remains regulated by numerous contextual conditions affecting those participating. …

  2. Sexuality education: a ten-country review of school curricula in East and Southern Africa

    This collaborative regional curriculum scan, which was conducted in 2011, seeks to assess the content, quality, and delivery methods of sexuality education curricula in ten ESA countries and aims to ensure that the reviews help countries to develop curricula designed to not only increase comprehensive knowledge among young people, but to empower them to adopt protective behaviours, such as refusing unwanted sex, delaying sex, using condoms and testing for HIV. The ten countries included are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

    Teaching sexual and HIV and AIDS education in schools has been the subject of debate and discussion for a while now southern Africa. The debates have mainly centred around three key issues – at what stage to introduce it, what kind of curricula is appropriate and who is qualified to provide such teaching.   5. Tackling HIV/AIDS: Mass-media and international conferences. Soul City, Going to scale across borders: the Choose Life project

    Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

    The topics covered in Curriculum-in-the-Making are ones that illustrate the dynamic nature of the work. Chapters Two, Three and Four have a great deal to say about our own beliefs as teacher educators in addressing HIV/AIDS. Chapters Five and Six highlight pedagogy while Chapters Seven and Eight offer support on assessment and evaluation to teacher educators and teachers.   7. Creating space for HIV and AIDS in the curriculum: a rapid assessment of curricular responses in South African higher education institutions

    This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter maps out the area of theories and models of teaching and HIV/AIDS in HEIs. In so doing it draws attention to this work as a knowledge area in the study of Higher Education, and provides an overview of the methods used to carry out the study. The second chapter is a review of the literature on teaching and HIV/AIDS in Higher Education, focusing in particular on the national and regional literature. Chapter three offers a situational analysis of HIV/AIDS and teaching in HEIs in South Africa. Chapter four provides recommendations.

  11. Taking stock of promising approaches in HIV/AIDS and Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: What works, why and how. A synthesis of country case studies

    As a result of the Johannesburg Biennial Meeting and the Prospective Stock-Taking Review, ADEA invited the African ministries of education to analyze the different interventions they have implemented to control HIV and manage its impact on the sector. The broad objective is then to compile these case studies to identify promising practices, and subsequently share this information with other ministries. This particular study lists country initiatives and explores the interventions already in place to estimate their effectiveness and begin to collect lessons learned.
