    This Regional Strategic Framework focuses on three core issues that are of utmost importance for the realization of the MDG 6 in Latin America and the Caribbean: evidence, human rights and capacity. Effective responses to HIV epidemics require robust and reliable information about who is affected by HIV and about what works in prevention and care.   2. Hatred in the hallways: violence and discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students in U.S. schools

    This publication discusses documented attacks on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth who have been subjected to abuse by their peers, and in some cases by their teachers and school administrators. To date, these violations are compounded by the lack of legislation to protect these students from discrimination and violence. Youth around the world ages 12 through 21 were interviewed for this report. In addition, 130 youth service providers, teachers, counselors, and parents were surveyed. …

  3. Addressing homophobic bullying in second-level schools

    Irish legislation and educational policy guidance requires schools to promote equality of access to and participation in education. In this context schools are required to address discrimination, harassment and bullying, including homophobic harassment and bullying. However these are relatively recent developments, and much work remains to be done to put in place practical and meaningful responses at school level. The aim of this report and the research contained within it is to assist schools in developing a positive and practical response to homophobic bullying. …

    This webinar presented an overview of research findings from GLSEN's 2009 National School Climate Survey, as detailed in a new report on the school experiences of LGBT youth that was released on September 13th. We discussed the prevalence of a hostile school climate for many LGBT youth, including the high frequency of homophobic remarks made in school and of in-school victimization because of sexual orientation and gender expression. …

    Report on the five years anti violence research project of the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington State. This landmark report describes the findings of a five-year study in elementary, middle and high schools in 37 school districts. Included are 111 actual case studies of the incidents reported to the researchers, ranging from name-calling to 22 assaults and 8 gang rapes.

  10. Bullied: a student, a school and a case that made history

    Bullied is a Teaching Tolerance documentary film that chronicles one student's ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies and offers an inspiring message of hope to those fighting harassment today. It can become a cornerstone of anti-bullying efforts in middle and high schools. An accompanying Viewers Guide provides standards-aligned activities for classroom viewing of Bullied, as well as guidance for educators to create environments that are safe for all students, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.

  13. Homophobia in schools in Eastern Europe: program and abstracts

    The main aim of the seminar is to address how homosexuality is dealt with in (primary and secondary) schools in Eastern Europe, what is the situation of GLBT pupils/students in these schools and how GLBT teachers are treated at their workplace in schools. The seminar is organized as part of the European research project 'Citizens in Diversity: A Four Nation Study on Homophobia and Fundamental Rights' financed by the European Commission.   15. Taking over the school: student gangs as a strategy for dealing with homophobic bullying in an urban public school district

    This article discusses the African American lesbian gang, DTO (Dykes Taking Over), as an example of a student-initiated strategy for dealing with homophobic bullying in an urban American school district. A series of alleged incidents of same-sex sexual harassment by gang members on heterosexual students illustrate how lesbian/bisexual threat was used by these women to re-establish a power differential after they experienced bullying based on their sexuality and gender expression. …
