  2. A case for legal protection for sexual minority educators

    Discrimination based on sexual orientation in K–12 education is not prohibited in many school districts across the United States. Teachers who are of the sexual minority (gay, lesbian, or bisexual) must remain closeted or risk losing their jobs. A history of past court decisions and laws deeming sexual minorities to be degenerates from which children should be protected, coupled with little legal protection for sexual minorities, have pressured many educators into remaining quiet about their identity. …

  4. Effects of homophobic versus nonhomophobic victimization on school commitment and the moderating effect of teacher attitudes in Brazilian public schools

    This study investigated homophobic victimization, teacher support, and school commitment in Brazilian schools. Participants were 339 students, ages 11 to 18, in two public schools in Brazil. Data were obtained using the Brazil Preventing School Harassment Survey. Structural equation modeling revealed that both homophobic and nonhomophobic victimization were negatively related to school commitment but that homophobic victimization was a stronger predictor. Results supported the hypothesis that supportive teachers can moderate the relationship between victimization and school commitment. …

    Students’ school education consists of not only what they are explicitly taught in the classroom, but also what they implicitly learn through the language, attitudes and actions of other students and teachers. When these attitudes, remarks and actions are unsupportive or hostile, they create a school climate that can negatively impact students’ feelings of safety and their interest in school and learning.     Plusieurs enquêtes récentes, principalement états-uniennes, et depuis peu canadiennes, ont sondé la prévalence de l'homophobie - qu'elle soit d'ordre physique, verbal ou autre - dans les écoles ainsi que ses conséquences néfastes sur les jeunes qui en sont victimes.En documentant de façon concrète l'homophobie en milieu scolaire et ses impacts sur la persévérance et la réussite scolaires, notre recherche vise à informer, à mobiliser et à outiller l'ensemble des acteurs du monde de l'éducation en ce qui concerne les conséquences négatives de l'homophobie sur les jeunes qui en sont victimes.

  14. Hatred in the hallways: violence and discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students in U.S. schools

    This publication discusses documented attacks on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth who have been subjected to abuse by their peers, and in some cases by their teachers and school administrators. To date, these violations are compounded by the lack of legislation to protect these students from discrimination and violence. Youth around the world ages 12 through 21 were interviewed for this report. In addition, 130 youth service providers, teachers, counselors, and parents were surveyed. …

    Report on the five years anti violence research project of the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington State. This landmark report describes the findings of a five-year study in elementary, middle and high schools in 37 school districts. Included are 111 actual case studies of the incidents reported to the researchers, ranging from name-calling to 22 assaults and 8 gang rapes.
