  1. Accelerating education’s response to HIV and AIDS

    A review was conducted to assess key achievements of the Accelerate Initiative, lessons learned and possible ways forward. The output of this review is a technical paper titled ‘Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV and AIDS: Five Years On’, which describes how UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank and other partners have been working together since 2002 to help countries in sub-Saharan Africa develop strong leadership in the education sector response to HIV and AIDS.

  3. Education and HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa. Policy and Programme Action Brief

    Both general education and HIV and AIDS-related education have a role to play in protecting girls from infection. Two recent estimates of the scale of the effect are similar and suggest that each additional year of education leads to a 6.7% (Uganda) or 7% (South Africa) reduction in likelihood of acquiring infection. The protective effects of education may be particularly strong for girls.

  6. Accelerating the education sector response to HIV/AIDS in Africa: a review of World Bank assistance

    This report examines World Bank financing for the Education Sector HIV/AIDS Response in Sub-Saharan Africa up to mid-2004. The review was undertaken in response to a consultation with African countries which identified a need for information on how the World Bank education sector was responding to the epidemic through its sectoral assistance programs and through its participation in the Multi-Country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP). Documents and data were reviewed, and key informants interviewed. There are four key findings of the review. …
