    A review was conducted to assess key achievements of the Accelerate Initiative, lessons learned and possible ways forward. The output of this review is a technical paper titled ‘Accelerating the Education Sector Response to HIV and AIDS: Five Years On’, which describes how UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank and other partners have been working together since 2002 to help countries in sub-Saharan Africa develop strong leadership in the education sector response to HIV and AIDS.

  3. From Cairo to New York: Inventory of youth sexual and reproductive health and rights language since the 1994 international CPD

    In 1994, delegations assembled in Cairo from 179 member states and from thousands of NGOs for the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Member states negotiated a 20-year action plan to develop a “new era of population” by 2015. The ICPD Programme of Action (also known as the Cairo Consensus) placed the individual needs and rights of men and, especially, women as the single most important factor for governments in determining population and development policies and strategies. This demonstrated a shift from the previous focus on achieving demographic targets. …

    The EFA Fast Track Initiative seeks to support countries in developing an HIV/AIDS response as part of the education sector plan for EFA1. The EFA Fast Track Initiative (henceforth FTI) is a multi-donor effort to assist low income countries to achieve Universal Primary Education (UPE) by 2015. It helps countries to develop credible and evidence based education sector plans that will attract incremental external assistance.   7. Accelerating the education sector response to HIV/AIDS in Africa: a review of World Bank assistance

    This report examines World Bank financing for the Education Sector HIV/AIDS Response in Sub-Saharan Africa up to mid-2004. The review was undertaken in response to a consultation with African countries which identified a need for information on how the World Bank education sector was responding to the epidemic through its sectoral assistance programs and through its participation in the Multi-Country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP). Documents and data were reviewed, and key informants interviewed. There are four key findings of the review. …
